Cozy Games And Misogyny

Gaming

Go to http://www.squarespace.com/izzzyzzz to get a free trial and 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain !! Cozy games are not ‘real games’- at least according to a surprisingly large contingent of gamers. Today, I want to examine the cozy game genre and how it has been impacted and shaped by misogyny. From the early history of the genre, to its devoted fanbase, to an exploration of the criticisms levelled against it, let’s examine this genre and why it is so often pushed to the side. A huge thank you to Belle, Gabby DaRienzo and everyone else who contributed their thoughts snd experiences! I love how you’re outside for this video. Not in any negative connotation but it’s refreshing to hear the birds and see the trees, have the actual sun as your lighting. This added to the topic of the video is just very summery and lovely. Love your videos!!!

I have a friend who had her esports manager talk to her about Resident Evil, and he went "are you one of those girls who just play it because you like Leon Kennedy?" She's been playing the games since she was a young teen and dives deep into the lore about them. She also likes Leon. Who doesn't? Same manager didn't know who Ethan Winters was btw. It's annoying that girls have to PROVE they aren't just playing a game for "you just like this male eyecandy" or "you're just a poser".

I'll be honest, the over saturation thing isn't really a fair critqe cause that SAME THING can be said for just about any popular genre. I remember when there were tones of minecraft and terrira knock offs. What ever genre becomes popular after cozy will suffer the SAME "over saturation"

Honestly, I’m too scared to try out competitive online games because it’s a lose-lose scenario. Either I’d be mocked for being bad at a game because I’m a ‘dumb girl’ or I’d be harassed for being good at one. As silly as it sounds, I’m afraid that if I tried to play a competitive game and sucked, I’d be disgracing my gender or just proving the sexist stereotypes right. It’s really the only reason why I stick to single-player and co-op games

it's so frustrating when people talk about women being worse at competitive games as if it's nature and not nurture. competitive games take a lot of hours and a lot of communication to be good at and when you get sexually harassed or at best told you sound like a 12 year old (because they're assuming you're male) every time you talk in voice chat you're going to either avoid talking in voice chat, play the game less because it's not fun, or both. even if you're not talking to try to avoid the misogyny you'll be on edge the whole time anyway. the misogyny in the scene is so pervasive it is a constant distraction that will inevitably affect your performance. and they always turn around and say "lol it's toxic to everybody get over it you wouldnt last 10 seconds in a cod lobby" but if you're a man the only way you're getting yelled at in EVERY SINGLE LOBBY is if you're truly ass. if you're a woman you're getting dragged to hell and back constantly even if you're top fragging let alone playing averagely. it's also different getting harassed for who you ARE rather than just the same neutral shit everyone else gets. black people experience a lot of the same shit if they "talk black" from what I understand. I can't speak to that too much as I'm not black but I felt like that was worth mentioning as well

All I can say is: as a gay guy who LOVES cozy games AND online games like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals, we (gay men) also feel the brunt of it and I do whatever I can to support and be as kind as possible as I can to the girls who are on my teams/in my lobbies

It's always interesting to me how misogynistic and queerphobic the world is. I'm in my bubble of family and friends who are just good people, we play all sorts of video games and don't label girl and boy games, It's been so long since that has been in my life I just feel so sad that this still such an issue. I wish the world was more kind to minorities of every kin.

I'm reminded of middle school, where the girls who liked Kingdom Hearts are somehow lesser gamers than the boys who liked Kingdom Hearts. Never made sense, but that never stopped them.

I remember back in highschool, i only got this stalky guy to leave me alone by telling him I only play animal crossing. He lost interest and stopped following me, and it was the only time I've felt good about people disliking my interests lol.

I don’t think the reinforcement of capitalism in the cozy games is…a problem? I think it’s kind of just what we know, and sometimes there’s comfort in something familiar, but without any of the baggage that it comes with in real life and everything is just ethical and cool. It can be kinda nice to see something so bad irl and show what it could be if people didn’t suck so bad. It could just be me though

Apologies if its been mentioned already, but the whole "real games" thing reminds me of the whole "are you doing a real degree or an arts degree" attitude people have - with games like acnh where a large focus is put on decoration I feel like theres a parallel there, where people dont take creativity seriously or think its worthwhile

The way women have been historically treated in gaming is truly unfortunate. I would personally welcome with open arms any woman sharing my interests, well, anyone really, i just love games in general

When I was a kid, I was always bullied by my older sibling for not being a *’real gamer’* because I liked these games. It was 2010 and being a cool gamer was popular. So it really hurt. 😔🎮 Because cozy games have always been my thing, I’ve always given this a lot of thought. ‘Cozy games’ isn’t a bad title for these games. Games like these are often pretty cozy, cute, or wholesome. But I strongly believe a lot of ‘cozy games’ are better described as ‘sandbox games’. An example of a sandbox game is Minecraft, a game where you can do whatever you want, and set your own goal. Sandbox games typically have a big thing in common, no PvP competition system. They’re not typically games that rely on a ‘win or lose’ mechanic. The world of video games is a strange place to analyze, as you look at how so many games have been gendered. Ty Izzy, I love a video about the gaming community. 💕👏😔💝

One of the weirdest reactions to a game targeted at women was Yahtzee questioning why Homicipher was targeted towards women, since it's a good game and without the otome tag it might sell more. HUH?? I really like him, but was this really the first time he came across a game not targeted towards them. The comment captures two sides of the games industry that I find incredibly depressing: focus on sales, and lack of understanding for different points of view. There are games featuring female leads, but that rarely is a lens the story is told through, where as in Homicipher it's really important, just like in Silent Hill f. But back to the point, this shows how separated gaming spaces are still, not only because women might like different games, but also because men don't want to play games targeted towards women and can't understand why game might be targeted towards women.

20:15 holy shit. accusing someone of "misandry" when pointing out misogyny, and then continuing to perpetuate said misogyny? i can't even express how stupid this sounds

As a guy who played primarily shooters I never bought into the "cozy games are easy" argument because the reason I was never able to get into them is that I found them ro be much more stressful than just shooters. I'll never make fun of Stardew Valley players because y'all are WAY stronger than me

Disco Elysium is my favorite cozy game. Walking around Martinaise with Kim along with the wintery weather and that wonderful music was really relaxing to me lol

As a woman who loves stardew and the sims, I still feel relaxed a lot when I play GTA online (private server) or Dead by daylight. That’s right, I enjoy spending two hours driving back and forth in my luxury car to my money laundering operation, and my illegal weed farm to drop off supplies only to have one of them raided by the cops so then I need to get into a shootout, all the while my phone is ringing with people who keep trying to give me jobs that I have no interest in doing, then after I have either reclaimed my business or been released from prison, then going home to play GTA. It really takes the edge off.
