This should have been whistled for offside. During the creation of this situation, the player was offside, having gained that position illegally, so he had no right to participate in a legal action a second later. It's the same as trying to correct another player's shot while in an offside position. If he hadn't participated in the action, fine. But if he participates in the action seconds after being offside, then the advantage was created illegally, so the goal should be disallowed.
