Is a light controlled junction the same as turning into a side road when it comes to allowing pedestrians to cross? It seems to me, if that was the case here, then it could also be the case when exiting a roundabout. You can imagine the chaos it would cause if it was. I'm not disputing the outcome, I'm in agreement there.

Normally in Poland if drivers got green lights pedestrians got red lights on so in this situation. Pedestrians will be entering on red light so full responsibility to pedestrians. But this is UK you can pass middle of junction still will be ok ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป

Actually I believe both vehicles are at fault. The pedestrian had already stopped on the central reservation but the black car stopping as it did invited the pedestrian to potentially cross into the path of danger. If the pedestrian had been further across and the HGV was going faster, she could very easily have been knocked down by both the black car AND then in turn by the HGV.

Let's just ignore the rules about why the car stopped, whether he should have stopped, etc. The truck hit a car. End of story. Let's look at it this way. You have a hot cup of coffee. You're walking through McDonald's to sit down. There's someone standing not quite in the line to order because no one in the UK knows how to _actually_ stand in a queue.... while complaining about standing in a queue (the most notable example is getting on a bus, where there's never a queue. It's a random bunch of people from multiple angles shoving their way in). You're not looking where you're going for.... reasons. And you bump into them and spill piping hot coffee all over them. They weren't supposed to be there. But does that mean you shouldn't have been held reliable? Of course not. It doesn't matter if there's a drunk, naked guy high on crack doing the charleston in the middle of the street. "Not being there" does not mean "hit him because you're not paying attention". I know people wish it was true but no, the Charles Montgomery Burns excuse of "got in my way", is not an acceptable excuse.

Whatever the new laws and new rules say, the pedestrian could have waited for the cars to pass before crossing. In my view the driver of the black car shouldn't have stopped because its not a designated crossing. The lorry driver was too close there's no doubt about that but as I say in my view the car shouldn't have stopped. These new rules about stopping for pedestrians crossing road junctions is utterly stupid and dangerous! What happened to the green cross code? STOP LOOK LISTEN you dont cross until the way is clear.

In this case I canโ€™t agree at all with the outcome. The truck was crossing at a junction and as he would have seen there was not a light controlled crossing, so wouldnโ€™t expect the black car to stop for a pedestrian. Trucks have wide areas of obscured vision from pillars etc, so the black car stopping was probably in that zone.

It doesn't matter about lights or people crossing. Ffs if you're behind a car and it stops, it's your responsibility not plough into the back of it. The highway codes had STOPPING distances in for years for a reason.

Dumb place stop, still the trucks fault. Easy.

C
cynthia.horn 1ย month ago

Yeah its the trucks fault but as a truck driver myself, I can assure you that if this truck driver was driving the way he should of been he'll of been checking either of his mirrors while turning so what's a bloke to do without crossing his eyes to see everything

There are courteous drivers out there the car driver was just one of them. I do agree that's the type of situation that could catch anyone out but must say many hgv drivers may want to be courteous in this situation especially if the pedestrians pushing a pram because they tend to push the pram half way off the kerbside as they wait for the trailer to go past. Please don't shoot me down I'm just constantly forward thinking in an advanced way. It's what hgv drivers do or should be doing.

Lorry is driving without due car and attention. No excuse for this.

I think I would have slowed here but given the pedestrian had stopped, continued on my way. While I know stopping for pedestrians when turning is a thing, it's not 'you must'. If there are cars coming are cars behind me, I will go slow enough to stop if the pedestrian steps out, but ultimately not stop in that situation, it's always going to be dodgy. Really dislike this rule.

The car wath standing for almost half an hour before the truck crashed into it. Looks like the truck-driver was checking his Insta while driving.

What if some stops half way out at a roundabout for no reason?
