Fun fact: if you dump Astarion for any other companion except Gale, he acts cool. But if you dump him for Gale, he rages :D

Honestly this is why I think having Gale, Astarion, and Shadowheart in a party is the best group. Their banter and chemistry is hilarious and interesting

I've always felt that Gale is Astarion's best friend (after the main character). They immediately fall into a "brothers" kind of relationship, with all the teasing, mocking and bickering, but they also have some surprisingly sweet moments. Which makes sense, because Gale is very accepting of Astarion right from the start, without being naive about it. He judges individuals by their actions, not their labels, but he's also insightful enough to understand that it's not fair to judge a person's actions without context. That's a rare trait, and I love that the most socially awkward companion is good at that!

When I was playing for the first time, I couldn't choose between the two. After getting to the Shadow Cursed Lands and fighting that first hoard, Gale made his little speech about the effect that danger has on "one's desires for stimulation", and I swear, Astarion looked PISSED. I half expected to find Gale dead when I went to camp that night. My stupid ass recording software wasn't working at the time and I've tried so many times to recapture that moment, but Larian must have edited it in a patch, I never managed to recreate it.
