Even though Taiwan got blown out as early as the second inning, the fans never stopped cheering, which I found deeply moving. For the young Taiwanese players, facing a Japanese roster featuring stars like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be invaluable experience and something they’ll probably remember for the rest of their lives. Many people may not realize how difficult the early 2000s were for Taiwanese baseball. While the overall level of the Premier 12 cannot fully compare to the very top international competitions, the success of the 2024 tournament still represents an important milestone for the development of baseball in Taiwan. That said, the reality is that only a small number of Taiwanese players have been able to successfully challenge MLB. Taiwan is not yet a true global baseball powerhouse. This game also reminds us that at the WBC level, even Taiwan’s strongest roster, made up of the best domestic players, will still struggle against top teams. There is clearly still a long road ahead for Taiwanese baseball. Let’s keep moving forward and continue doing the right things. Hopefully one day we’ll see Taiwan become a team that can truly compete for the WBC title, like Samurai Japan, with many players developing into Major League–level talent
