The librarian at the elementary school I work at has a SNES mini hooked up for the kids to use during reward days....it always draws a crowd!
Nintendo themselves openly said that it was filler to stuff a revenue hole, which means that they never intended to go past SNES unless business stayed bad. Nevertheless I enjoyed the fact that those consoles were completely open and you could flash any rom onto them with a usb cable and a tool.

I wanted a Dreamcast mini
Their true legacy is new USB revisions of official controllers, which are all glorious and essential accessories for my MiSTer systems.
Nintendo figured out that selling people mini consoles doesnt push them towards their subscription eco system.
We were robbed of a Master System mini and an N64 mini. This is the greatest crime in gaming.
I use the mini consoles when we have big parties at my house and I want systems anybody can walk up, grab a controller and play a classic game easily. They are total hits at these parties. 👍
I would much rather own these than terrible subscription services where you don’t own your games.

the sad part is that you don't own anything now with the Nintendo subscription services, you just pay to play instead.

I use my SNES Mini almost daily, have it modded, bring it to work, play during my lunch periods. Can reload it with whatever I’d like and it’s a fan favorite in the office.
No Dreamcast mini is a tragedy
Out of all the mini-consoles the one I actually still boot up and play is the Turbografx Mini. No one I knew had a Turbografx, let alone the CD-addon, and there's a lot of great stuff on there that never released elsewhere apart from a weird 2.5D PSP remake.
I still use my modded SNES mini from time to time. It was a darn good machine.
Nintendo SNES Classic Mini Homescreen interface was brilliant, I enjoy using it very much
