She grew up in a household where her father, Amare Ramo, was abusive toward her mother, Makena Rosa Ramo. As she grew up, Sovaia loved music and often used it as an escape, with the violin being her favorite instrument. Her mother encouraged her passion and used all her savings to buy her a violin for her 9th birthday. Around the age of 10, when this video takes place, Sovaia witnessed her father hurting her mother, and in a desperate attempt to save her, she shot him. Neighboring houses heard the gunshot and the commotion, and called the police. Makena took the blame for Sovaia’s actions and was unjustly sentenced to 10 years for voluntary manslaughter, even after pleading self-defense. Sovaia was left in the care of her ailing grandmother but ran away a few months later, hoping to become a violinist. When her plan failed, she visited her mother in prison for advice. Her mother gave her a contact to an old friend of hers who played violin professionally.
