I think there's a photo out there of Graham McTavish and Richard Armitage wearing their massive dwarf boots with regular shorts and t-shirts and it really showed just how much padding the dwarf actors had to wear. I mean, both Graham and Richard are pretty big, fit guys, but at that moment, they both looked like beanstalks in a flower pot.
The Internet keeps telling me to hate The Hobbit, but I keep finding reasons to like it.
The hand and arm prosthetics are also a great example of why the Dwarves in LOTR/The Hobbit productions look so good while a lot of other Fantasy productions struggle to get the look right. It's all about the proportions. The body needs to be short, but you can't make the actors any shorter, and using real short people just give them the proportion of real short people and not Fantasy Dwarves. So an average size person just beefed up to be *wide* is the key to getting the look right.
The huge arms really sell the dwarf. It's like he has big human arms but attached to a 5" frame. Graham looks like he has human arms attached to a human.

I'd like to point out that Graham McTavish is an absolutely amazing VA, and specifically he voiced Dracula in the Netflix Castlevania series, which also features Richard Armitage, the actor who played Thorin. Always loved that small overlap.
