Can the Manhattan S4R directly replace Sky Q? In this video I take a look at the brand new Manhattan S4R Freesat recorder, including setup, recording and user experience. If you’re thinking about cancelling Sky but still want access to Free-to-air channels, recording and an easy-to-use experience without the monthly bills, this could be one of the best options available right now. 00:00 Overview 00:57 Unboxing & Remote 01:25 Setup 02:24 TV Guide 04:20 Home Screen 05:22 Settings 08:45 Recording 10:53 My Experience 12:40 Final Thoughts Amazon Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/4wnKqS5 Note: The Manhattan S4R gives you access to free to air channels only Freesat only. Thanks for the review. I have just purchased one of these for collection this week at Argos. I have cancelled my sky which ends in June then I will give this a go. I do have the TR4 box on another telly and am very pleased with it so fingers crossed for this unit. Sky have no respect for loyalty I’ve been with them for 30 years and their retention offer was disgraceful compared to what a new customer can get. I will use now tv for my sports fix as and when required.
Got mine after leaving sky. Worth every penny. Works a treat.
I’m another customer who’s been with Sky for more than 30 years, but the £90 per month I’m paying for Movies and F1 now feels hard to justify given how little I actually watch. I’ve decided that when my contract ends next year, I’ll cancel and move over to streaming via Apple TV instead. The main concern from others in the household is losing the ability to record programmes and watch live TV, so this Manhattan satellite box looks like it could provide a good alternative. My Freeview reception via the aerial is very poor, so satellite is really the only practical option.
Looks a real game changer to come away from SKY subscription?? The icing on the cake is if the Manhattan gave you the opportunity to purchase a WiFi ability to multi room like SKY Q box, as that’s the only thing holding me off getting Rid of that bunch of Robbing Bar stewards permanently!! Thanks for sharing
You're right, that set up screen feels so PlayStation 2 😮 HDR too, nice! Sky has gotten crazy
Looks like another winner from Manhattan..
Bought one of these last week, was just going to set it up and I spotted your review. Great review and very useful for anyone unsure how to set up this box
Looks an ideal replacement for when my Sky Q contract ends in a few months. This plus Now TV via my Apple TV should save me loads and the S4R will pay for itself in 3 months 🙂
Such a shame there's no Apple, Netflix, Prime...
There still isnt a Freesat option to replicate Multiroom in the same way with Sky Q miniboxes for the two other rooms in my house. Seems a shame Manhattan cant replicate this sort of set up as its the only reason I keep Sky Q for the basic free channels for £20 a month.
Well done Ryan... Stumbled across your channel the other day and was so impressed bought the S4-R box yesterday - like you say it's a terrific replacement for the sky Q box. Excellent review, particularly in your comments on the settings selections so thanks for those - no way would I have figured out some of those finer settings adjustments but now make sense. Will deffo follow your channel and share..... Thanks again - well pleased I got the freesat box and lucky I saw your review!
Got one from Richer sounds. Great pic. Easy to set up and use.
Best thing about SkyQ is the sky mini boxes. If this came with a remote mini box thing so it can be seen in other rooms then it would be brilliant
Picked up one on preorder from Richer Sounds after I watched one of your earlier videos. It certainly is a good replacement for SkyQ if you don’t watch cinema and sports. There is a lag in responsiveness compared to skyQ, but I would say it’s very marginal. Saving about £60 a month compared to Sky, when I cancelled my TV I also moved by broadband to my mobile phone provider. Initially I was going to renew my Sky subscription, but the thought of a new TV from them with streaming made me look around. Their loss.
I would be very concerned that after Sky tv stops transmission over satellite, as the satellite they use is due to be switched off in 2 years. It is belived that freesat will end as well. So these Manhattan S4R boxes will be e-waste sooner than you would think.
Isn't the problem with this that if Astra don't put up another satellite, then the current one runs out of fuel in 2019, which is only three years away. These satellites cost millions and the fact Sky no longer sells Sky Q and Astra don't seem to have any plans this device will be a short-term solution.
Great review and very well edited. Every question I had whilst watching you answered. Found your channel a couple of weeks ago and now subscribed. I’ve just renewed my Sky (got a great deal). But will consider this when the price starts to rise … as it always does. Thanks again
Had mine a few days and so far I'm very pleased with it.
The issue that stops me going down this road is multi room !
Really nice review. If this gains access to mainstream streaming services that’s pretty much game over, but this does give people the chance to reset their subscription fee from Sky and retune their viewing experiences. Moving between a streaming box and this, whilst saving £100 a month, will be a minor inconvenience and very attractive for many.
