I think for a far test i think you should drive the BYD into the water
That "wire" is your fusible link. Fitted from the factory. Probably failed because the alternator was underwater and shorted out

Back when Toyota made quality vehicles, my mates been a Toyota Mechanic for the past 30 years, he just finished a job on a 200 series that did the same thing, $25k with of wiring loom replacement, every connection was fried

Good rundown guys of a recovery from a shitshow. I carry an oil, air and fuel filter but I vacuum seal them. I think you should consider that too...;)

Its called a fusible link , make sure you put another one on or you could burn it to the ground.
I have had my 80 for 25 years and still going strong. It’s a petrol and loves slurping down the fuel. It has never let me down. 419,000 km with usual general maintenance issues. Still drives as well as it did 25 years ago. Go the 80’s!!!!
