In 2025 the Fortuners sold 9049 units in South Africa vs Ford Everest 3444 units and MU=X 1326 units. It has been in the top 10 best selling vehicles in South Africa for the past 10 years.
Blame the auto journos. They've just ignored the fortuna for years.
I cannot understand why people still buy new Ford vehicles.
Fortuner is a great vehicle. It was just marketed wrong in Australia. Not to mention when they launched it as “all new” in Australia it had been out for nearly a decade in SE Asia.
This is interesting for me. I live in Namibia, an the Fortuner is the most sold 4X4 SUV in Southern Africa. As we have "self-drive tourism" here, most tour companies only have Fortuners as standard for tourists to hire. Great vehicle in our desert environment, great drivetrain and offroad capabilities.
In South Africa, it outsells all its competitors.
It depends on the country. Here in the Philippines, they are EVERYWHERE
I have the pajero sport 2023. Has the fold down rear seats, rear differential locker and generally fantastic car, similar to fortuner but slightly better design.
Fortuner is a great 4wd especially for a work car. Shame they aren’t bringing them back to straya.
By far one of the most underrated 4x4 SUVs is the Mitsubishi Pajero. Solid, reliable, well-priced and seriously capable both on and off-road.
In South Africa, Fortuner is probably the most popular SUV - BUT it’s a complete safety risk because of theft and car jacking problems. Fortuners and Hilux’s get stolen on the daily to get exported to other african countries, and or if your tracking company manages to find it, it will be stripped completely within an hour or two. I think in RSA, the MUX is not as popular as I have seen in Perth. Everest is strong second here. I have a 2017 M/T 4X4 Fortuner 2.8 and love every moment going camping with it and exploring our beautiful country.
I don't own a Toyota. But in south Africa. If I leave my house I can't go anywhere without seeing at least 1 fortuner.
The Fortuner is super popular in Thailand, India and South Africa. I bought a 2022 GXL and just had the whole engine replaced under warranty at 40K km. Thank goodness the warranty covered it, the timing chain rattle is the main issue but Toyota happily does this under warranty, they are great and very capable 4WDs
Hey Ronny , Its a fucking super hit in India. It sells close to 70,000 to 1,00,000 units in a year.
Bought new Pajero Sport GLS 2021 over Fortuna price and value. 8 speed and Super Select 4WD, put 265/70r17s on it and Calcup Hill was no problem. Has been able to go everywhere I asked it to go.
If they just called it the 4Runner or the hilux surf it probably would have gone well.
You guys are so lucky to be having this conversation. In Brazil we don’t have the prado, only fortunes. There base price here is around 118k 😓
2012 V6 4x4 Fortuner serving my family for 14 years unfailingly. Only issue she ever had was a squeeky propshaft boot. Other than that, she's carried us over 300,000+kms through all of Southern Africa. A lovely vehicle that will keep caring for you as long as you care for it.
I looked at the Fortuner when I upgraded from my 2014 MU-X. What put me off was the poor cargo area with the fold up seats (I often need the 7 seats). I bought a new MU-X instead. I considered the 250 Prado, but the mid spec Prado was over 20k dearer than my top spec MU-X.
The salesman at toyota said Fortuner sales were up 13% and rising after the release of the new Prado. Buyers were beginning to realise the Fortuner was far better bang for buck, and it began cutting into Prado sales, hence why they have canned it in Australia. Clearly poor marketing by Toyota Australia. Cheers for the vid.
