That's why Mechanical Engineers out there always refuel on full tank in the morning when it is still chilly, to save money. 😅

That's not a secret. Airplanes have been dealing with that for years. It's one of the reasons why they use capacitive fuel quantity probes rather than float type.

They didn't discover it, Four Wheel motorsport had used for years until it was forbidden by the rules. I'm sure they'd have known about it and hoped the rules didn't state that fuel must be at ambient temperature. 😂

Sounds like some of the NASCAR cheats. A basketball in the tank, which is then deflated. A MASSIVE fuel line (thick and winding) that holds several gallons all by itself.

A refinery in Lincolnshire in the UK uses a cryogenic unit to chill fuel before it passes through the meter that calculated the fuel duty and VAT payable to the government. The refinery had to pay VAT weekly as the amount was so huge.

As a gas hauler in the upper midwest - MN & WI you always had to know the temp. A coworker loaded his #2 diesel load to 8800 gal, temp was -10°F. We always loaded gas to 8800. Diesel was loaded to 7700 gal. Max in good weather. Hudson WI scale was open, 1100+lbs over weight with #2 diesel. A very expensive lesson learned!
