My 2 cents on maintenance. I work at a place that has recently taken on a few chinese car brands, and stocking parts isnt neccessarily done to a convenient point, meaning most parts are special order at this point, so should there be a warranty claim or damage repair or general wear replacement, at this point, its quite a wait time to get everything together for the shops to fit/repair it. I love a good hybrid/ev, but for now, some of the newer players may cause headaches down the track if the parts situation isnt improved on over the next few years.
Good EV recommendations, to be balanced you probably should have mentioned that whilst their are Chinese car companies that are small and may present a risk, some of the big legacy auto companies like Nissan are also at risk under a mountain of debt. Past reliablility is not an indicator of future solvency.
Nice overview However strangely you forgot to mention Geely EX5 which is the 2nd largest sold EV in April and Sealion 7 ( the number one sold EV in April ) , you were really not enthusiastic about Zeekr 7x ( the number three in sales ) BMW IX3 is overpriced and not luxury at all Australian buyers voted with the sale numbers
If you are “feeling the crunch on fuel prices” and you need immediate relief then just take public transport if you can. It’s generally cheaper than driving.
I went from full ICE to full electric without a hybrid in between. All I can say is that it was the right thing to do. It was about 2 years ago, when diesel was cheap. Now, every time I unplug the car, not having to go for fuel still amazes me. As a motorcyclist traveller, I'm used to stopping for a splash and a coffee every 2 or 3 hours of riding. With an electric car, it's the same, minus the helmet. Never going back to infernal combustion. Electric cars are here to stay.
I bought a Honda ZRV ehev just before Xmas. Drives beautifully, and feels like a normal car with gear simulations. Averaging 4.9L/100km on 91 unleaded. So far it’s fantastic. And being a Honda, it’s gunna outlast most other cars.
Hi Paul, a good overview mate, but you forgot the EREV .. These are proving to be another logical option in Aussie land and they make more sense than the PHEV as you have a consistent drive experience and the power of the eDrives 100% of the time, they also use the ICE more efficiently and do not have all the complexity of integrating the ICE with the drive train. If I may also ask, why did you suggest the Zeekr 7X given they've only been in Aussie for 18 months now .. do you not consider them to also be a risk from a local dealership perspective? What's your take on the LFP, NMC and now the QILIN 3 batteries .. Thanks again!
Fact check: Xpeng did not go into receivership in Australia. TrueEV an independent distributor did because Xpeng Inc are seeking to provide their own distribution. Paul, forgets that Australia is dingo piss creek as his mate John Cadogan would say and every car manufacturer couldn’t give a rats arse about long term sales or service for a country with less population than a city in China.
Waiting for denza b8 review
Pleas ditch the background music
Clinging to legacy car brand narratives on price, quality, performance, size, and maintenance doesn’t make sense in 2026.
I have a Nissan X-Trail e-power and I’m getting over 900km per tank of fuel. I’m loving it.
Geely who owns Volvo, Zeekr, Polestar isn't mentioned lol
I want a PHEV Camry!
4:50 14 month Shark owner here. I'm 70% ev only, off solar. Couldn't be happier. But that hill...
I appreciate this video explanation so much, thank you for posting it. Not all of us are subject matter experts and may be starting at the beginning like I am. I am keen to move on from my petrol car but am overwhelmed with the multiple options. Thanks again 👍
Great review Paul!
In 2026, the electric vehicle industry is set to introduce new Shenxing and Qilin battery technologies. These advancements are moving the focus from individual parts to integrated battery systems that prioritize ultra-fast charging, high energy density, and improved safety.
I have a plug-in hybrid (MG HS) here in the UK and it works for me. I feel the benefits of both worlds. I'm fortunate my MG has a 75 mile real world EV range. I can't charge at home, but i can charge very cheaply while parked at my works depot, i can charge at a couple of relatives houses (i pay them) and if i am away on holiday or for business, i can usually charge at the hotel or what ever for peanuts. The beauty for me is i have 0 range anxiety. I literally do not have to worry at all. Fuel prices have gone crazy right now, so i make more effort to use EV charging more, but the crisis will not be forever. When it's over, i won't worry so much about being EV only. What I'm hoping for is for synthetic fuels to take off. It can be done and is incredibly efficient, but because of lack of infrastructure it is currently very expensive to produce. In the future i believe ICE will still be here, EV's will still be here and I'm all for it. We should all have freedom of choice on vehicles. In England, the government are penalising motorists by making everything about a car extortionatly expensive, unless you buy an EV 🙄 My governments choices have made me commit to a plug in. In the dream world, I'm still ICE all the way. I just love them. EV's are very nice too and have their perks, but i don't get the fizz from them.
We've done 43k km in our 2 years old Tesla Model Y. With solar and home battery, I've spent about $100 bucks to run it because we also have 3 hours of free electricity during the day. I'm looking to get the Geely EX2 in a few months for my mum. It would be a great little car for a pensioner and she can use my home charger too. As an avid motorcyclist, I'd love to have an electric motorbike with a battery >30 kWh. Maybe one day once solid state battery is the norm.
