You've reached the end
Where I live they made it illegal for junk yards to buy converters unless they were still attached to the whole car!! The thefts ended over night..
HOPE THAT WORKER HAS A GOOD RESPIRATOR!
Almost all of that is the ceramic catalyst support.
Fun fact, hybrid cars have 3x the amount of precious metal in their catalytic converters compared to most cars
I work for a utility company in NY and one morning bucket trucks all sounded like Harley’s Davidson. 30 trucks had every CC cut out
What you failed to mention is that the contents that is being emptied out of those converters only has a tiny amount of those metals you mentioned. The vast majority of that material is a ceramic substrate called cordierite. Each converter contains only a few grams ( around 1-5 combined) of each of those metals.
Somebody stole one of my converters. They did not know there were two on my truck. So, my son put a metal plate under the vehicle, welding it to the cross members. That prevention was like pure gold for me.
"Breathe that in."
Only a small percentage of that material is precious metals
No people steal them. Because of their drug addiction
No, they get stolen and sold to wrecking yards to be resold. Those things new are crazy expensive new and buying used is the only way some folks can afford them. I am sure some are cut up for precious metals but the majority are sold at the parts yard.
The cats on my Ford truck plugged while I was working out of town. I had to drill holes to get it to run again. I left a small fortune on the freeway 😂
I remember the good ole days without catalytic converters and we had handles to roll up the window.
had no idea...will start tonight
In Maine we have to prove vehicle ownership, registration or title (in your name) can’t have anybody do it for you and you need your state id to even have the junkyards talk to you before selling them. Oh and they have to have the cars VIN number on the that they came off of
They don't pay very good for them anymore
Good people out here recycling
I got that shit in my lungs in 2019 trying to help my engine breath and I swear it saved me from covid
At least out here the same mechanic selling the replacement to you is the same guy sending his sons out to steal them💯
Its mostly ceramic. The ceramic matrix/substrate is coated in a very thin layer of those precious metals.
