Sounds like diesel run out with the guy saying it was revving like that. The turbo spits oil into the combustion chamber and the car runs on its own oil until something or everything fails

Seen an old dude and his mrs stopped after breaking down, old guy had dementia and was trying to fix the engine but didnt remember bow to solve the issue. His mrs said he was a mechanic and the dementia took most of his knowledge off him. Was a hard conversation, but glad we stopped to help

I’ve been driving 35 years and only broke down twice and both times it was bikers who stopped to offer help and both times countless cars had passed without stopping. Bikers are some of the kindest people on the roads (with the exception of a few arseholes who give them all a bad name) so make sure you watch out for them and always double check at junctions because they’re hard to see.
