We had those at a golf course I worked at. Used it for mowing pond banks instead of using weedeaters.

We really used to just make some crazy things back in the 60s 😂 I love all the futuristic themed stuff from then and the 50s

They are usually used to mow embankments, lake sides & sand traps on golf courses

I think they worked better when they were new, I seem to remember them hovering a bit higher than that. A neighbor had a few of them, they didn't seem to last very long. We did manage to revive one once and we put the motor on an old Mohawk bicycle using a mini bike wheel bolted right to the motor's crankshaft. We mounted it to a piece of plywood on a hinge to drive the rear bike tire. We hinged the plywood off a bracket we welded to bike frame with two door hinges . When you pulled the motor down , the tire on the motor drove the top of the rear tire where we cut out the rear fender. It didn't have much power taking of but it was scary fast at full throttle. We soon realized that New Departure coaster brakes were not meant to stop a bike going that fast. They became a last ditch effort to stop if your shoes were getting hot. The bike never did have real brakes. We figured that the motor was likely turning between 3,000 and 3,400 RPM, and the rear wheel had to be going close to 1,200 rpm or more. It went fast enough to make your eyes tear and fast enough to make bicycle tires to bad things, like swell up and start smoking on the fenders. Two things hindered its top speed, one was the fact that the small tire would grow with speed, (it came off the rim a few times), it would get larger and when it got larger it would get out of balance and start shaking violently. When it did you had to let off the lever that held the motor down on the back tire. We had made a simple lever that would pull down on the hinge that held the motor, we would push it down against the top tube of the frame and pull a piece of rope over the end of it to hold it engaged. The weight of he motor on the side provided the release effort. The tire on the bike would wear fast, mainly from engaging the drive wheel, we would get about a month of use out of a bike tire. We never did clock it with a car but we easily were passing cars on a 50mph road, they looked like they were standing still sometimes. We had that thing for about two summers, then I traded it to some kid for a real dirt bike, a basket case Husqvarna 500. The kid that got the bike with the Flymo motor (I seem to recall it being a Tecumseh AH500 or 520 motor), took that bike on a full speed blast one night with zero concern for its inability to stop, he ended up getting chased, crashing and destroying it less than a week after getting it. One cop said they clocked him 'in excess of 80 mph' with no exhaust, no helmet, no lights, no brakes. We all soon learned that speed was like a drug, especially at that age.

Using a vintage oil can on a vintage machine. Cool!

Didn't realize it is a two stroke until it fired up. Cool.

I'd forgotten about those, I haven't seen one in decades. It's cool to see that at least one is still around.

I used one of those to mow tee banks at a golf course back in the 60s. You're on the side of a tee, steep embankment, slippery as hell and you're swinging this thing back and forth. It hits a big clod of grass and flips over. We called it the death machine.

My Dad had one when I was a little kid, always thought it was the coolest thing. Wish he had kept it

They make tools that allow you to remove the flywheel without damaging it. I noticed a fresh chunk of aluminum was broken off the flywheel with that puller. Look up Tecumseh Flywheel Knocker.

Got to love those little two stroke motors, I had a johnson boat motor that was mounted too low as an auxiliary on the boat I had, it would regularly dunk itself under water while running, spit all the water out and keep on chugging

So glad I just learned the rope trick.
