The weirdest thing is that even North Americans make this mistake 🤯

Yeah, in 2024 it took my husband and I, 15 hours to drive from Mackay to Warwick with our kids......we were literally still in QLD, just went from one end to the other. The country is so much bigger than people realise. And sadly many tourists don't believe us when we say how big it is until they try to accomplish something they think will be a short trip.

It works in reverse when you go to the UK. We had a campervan and looking on the road map we always expected it to take a couple of hours between towns, but it always turned out to be 10-15 minutes!

Expensive to travel, BECAUSE of the distances.

I'm a first gen Aussie, my dad's family are Brits & when the extended family came for Christmas, we had to explain that one cannot drive from Ipswich to Mackay & be back for dinner same day. That heatstroke, severe dehydration & sunburn is inevitable if one insists on sitting in the sun all day & not drinking fluids. Long story short; hospital😅

Did a month long trip in Australia for a wedding! (bride and groom paid for my flights and hotels too which was great!) I saw 3 cities. The wedding was 1 day. I was there for a month. All I saw was Sydney, Melbourne, and the inside of a hotel and church in Hobart. I got lost and ended up having to call my bf at the time who was in America to direct me back to the hotel via audio descriptions and photos of buildings or art scultures 😂😂 I don't know how I made it back to the hotel and I learned to never travel without opting for wifi data budgetted in 😅😅

Do people not google maps locations before they travel? I always go “how far/long will it take to get from a to be?” Google maps it. Then I can decide if getting excited for that road trip during the holiday is a good idea or not. Decide where I want to go before I book flights. Then you can pick the best airport for the area you want to travel in.

Reminds me of a story my (Brisbanite) Mum told me aboutsome German tourists, who wanted to drive up to Fraser/K'gari "for the day". When she told them they'd need a weekend, they responded "if we're going that far, we'll go to the Great Barrier Reef too!". 😂
