It Got Out of Hand... Turning This Hazard Into My Workshop

Looks great Vikkie...just an idea but putting a coat or two of white masonry paint (even a cheapo brand) on the walls and a light coloured garage floor paint on the floor makes a huge difference. They put a lot more light into a garage or storage space, even in natural light. Really helps when you're working in there or just looking for things.

The more independent, ‘genuine’ (not air quoted!) YouTubers I’ve followed over the years has led me to appreciate how real burnout can be for creators. Take care Vickie, it’d be interesting - if you were for it - to show us a little bit of the work “behind the scenes” - the “other” 40 hours of the week you spend editing, uploading, dealing with sponsor requests - etc. And, never feel you have anything to prove to anyone. You’re living a life many people, myself included, would love to give a try - but bravery hasn’t permitted, and in some ways - past choices and life circumstances. It’s a pleasure to be able to witness someone else doing these things - like flipping going out on a mini tractor thing to cut a hedge! You blinking legends. Grass always looks greener some days than others. Never listen to any hate - just stick to being genuine, enjoy all the joys, don’t beat yourself up in any lows. And remember - there’s a whole load of watchers who frankly we just weren’t brave enough to give it a go ourselves ❤😊

Re. screws - I started buying the eye-wateringly expensive Milwaukee packout tray things. They occasionally come up on offer (SGS engineering website in the UK is a good source). They’re extremely good - just a pain on the wallet! The deep ones are very deep. Great for dumping boxes of screws into. Otherwise we consolidate our cardboard boxes of them down into the fewest possible and keep them in cheap (deep) plastic trays off Amazon with labels stating the length (then we just pull the tray out and fish for the head size and type of screw, which is at least half the time saved when hunting). If you find a better way - I’m all ears too 😂 (I would sub to SGS’s mailing list though - they do put on some cracking deals every so often.)

Hi Vikkie, my dad used to store his screws in old jam jars. He would screw the lids below a shelf and then when he needed to get at the contents, he would just have to unscrew them. The doors look amazing.

If you're looking for easy to change up systems to hang your tools you really should look at a French cleat system. It's very inexpensive, uses lumber and items you have around the house, and gives you the freedom to reorganize things whenever the urge hits. The most genius idea I've ever seen for screws and nails and stuff is this kid called Modern Makeovers here on YouTube has a rotating 4x4 that he made and then attached a bunch of baby food jar lids to the wood. The baby food jars screw into the lids. So it's a rotating system that takes up very little space and you easily get to the different bits that you need. And the fact that they just unscrew from the lids makes it very easy to access the items in the jars.

You may be The Carpenter's Daughter but Hans is definitely The Carpenter's Daughter's dog... I love how you're using chopsaws and SDS drills and impact drivers etc and he's right next to you not giving a fk 😂 mine would be about 50ft away screaming at me 😂😂😂

My workshop (attached single garage) has evolved over the last 40 years. It started off totally empty when we first moved in. We actually managed to get a small car in it for about 6 weeks!! Now it's absolutely rammed with floor to ceiling racking down one side, benches with old kitchen units underneath & on the wall & shelving down the other side &, even the ceiling is being used to store long pieces of wood, ladders, pipework & shelving. I had to have a re-shuffle a few years ago to shoehorn in a wall mounted solar inverter & two floor mounted house batteries. I really envy all the outbuildings you have although keeping it all secure must be a constant worry.

Hi Vicky, that sealant rack is an ace idea. I may nick that as the majority of mess in my garage is down to paint rattle cans. As for screws I've always found the multi tray assortment cabinets good. They may cost a little but put labels on the little trays and it's dead quick to fund them. For longer bigger stuff, the trays that hang on a wall plate with hooks are useful. Both these methods also allow you to slide out the storage and take to your job if you need quite a few of them.

If you have any interest in 3D printing, gridfinity is an excellent way to organize screws, small parts, or tools in drawers. It does take time, but you can work on other projects while the printer does the work.

Take a look at the stanley fatmax storage box / case, it has a lot of boxes inside the case and you can remove the boxes filled with screws and take them to the job you are working on. I find that I can fit a box of screws in each of the containers and all your screws are kept together and easily accessible
