Run. Take your time getting estimates from at least 5 different sources.
Lots of red flags when they don't communicate. How long does it take to touch base with a client and be transparent? Think of how frustrated you will be DURING the construction if they are a-wall for days or weeks and you're unable to get in touch. My opinion is that any reputable construction company worth their salt will be honest and transparent even if that means having to give bad news, like delays.
Go with your gut instincts. When you approach this project, set expectations such as "I'd like to see a project plan with the timeline that has been set." Ask, "What things might set it back or modify the timeline? How often can we anticipate communication along the process." Think about what you think would be fair & have a very detailed open communication with your contractor in the beginning.
Definitely find someone else no matter when you decide to get it done. If they are starting this way, they'll finish this way. If they finish at all.

I just had a similar situation with a powder room addition. Everything seemed so simple in the begining but the closer it came to breaking through a wall, the less comfortable I felt so I called it off. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut.
