Interesting how similar this story is to the Prussian story about Frederick the Great. Supposedly, he too had potato fields guarded by soldiers so people would assume the crop was valuable and start stealing and cultivating it themselves. That said, we arenβt entirely sure whether either story actually happened this way. Itβs likely that both tales were later romanticized versions of very real efforts to promote potato farming in Europeβ¦ Maybe a disclaimer would have been nice that this is more of a legend than a fact

They used the same tactic with cabbage or citrus, on boat. It was a meal reserved for the officiers. Surelly after the crew were interested to get some because they thought it was a premium meal... I use thr same tactic with my children for the greens.
