For someone who wants to sell the car, he really REALLY doesn't try very hard. What with talking it down every chance he gets. Just crush it if it's so bad.
When pushing in a caliper piston, the easiest thing to do is use the old pad and a c-clamp and push it in and then you can easily install new pads.
The lines on the rotor are actually more for increased cooling than anything. They help with air flow over the rotor.
