Actually under EU law diesel exhaust pipes must point to the grounds, I think that is the only reason, cause all cars before that law have a visible straight exhaust pipe

The bigger question is: why would you want a diesel engine in a passenger car? In a van, a bus, a truck, a train, or a ship, fine. But not in a car.

I had 2 big Remus exhaust pipes on my W210 270cdi pointing foward not down. After giving it alot of gas for extended periods of time almost the entire left back side of my car including almost half of my licence plates would be black it was crazy

Diesel vehicles smoke if they have all the emissions crap fitted, once the crap is removed the engine burns cleaner and doesn't smoke. Better emissions results at the annual MOT test and about 25+% better MPG with all the emissions crap removed.
