OLED has ruled premium TVs for more than a decade — but RGB backlighting is the newest thing in high-end TV tech, and people are already asking if OLED is finally in trouble. So… is RGB actually better? Or are we getting a little ahead of ourselves? In this video, we compare OLED and RGB TVs side-by-side: contrast, brightness, color, viewing angles, price, size, burn-in concerns, and real-world performance. Because the answer isn’t as simple as “newer = better.” Like that TV stand in our videos? Dang that studio space came together nicely. Very clean and tidy.
I have the 75 inch Bravia 9, the 65 inch S95F and recently bought the 65 inch QM8L. I thought the newer QM8L with its new SQD tech and VA 2.0 panel would come close to the Bravia 9, but unfortunately it absolutely doesn't. I don't know where to begin, but overall the local dimming, processing power and clarity are on a completely different level. I have yet to see a lcd tv surpass the Bravia 9. For movies i also like the Bravia 9 better than the S95F. So i'm very excited to see what Sony will do with its new Bravia 9.2 true rgb.
Enjoying watching this on my Panasonic P65ZT60 plasma. 🙂
A video title that doesn't say OLED killer 👌🏼 both are great tech
The TL;DR: OLED is visibly superior in nearly every way … until life happens. I think OLED always has and will continue to be the darling of Hollywood, content creators, and anyone with a light-controlled room for whom size is not a huge concern (ding!). The. Reason RGB holds so much promise is that it can flourish in the awful conditions into which we put our displays. Sun soaked rooms, white reflective walls, it’s almost like having to make a display that could compete with Times Square on a sunny day. But that’s how a lot of folks live. Ask me what the best TV is and I’ll ask you to show me a typical day of you watching TV.
I had Mini LED for the past 2 years and I finally pulled the trigger on an OLED and I regret it. Not cuz it’s bad but because it’s so hard for me now to go back to LED/LCD. However, I keep my entire home dark as possible with low wattage lighting. If anyone had a bright room then I would recommend mini led in a heartbeat because they are good. I’m interested to see a Micro RGB in person. Regardless, looks like we are all winning with these newer TVS and more importantly, we now have more options!
I went from CRT to HD-projector to 3D-plasma to miniLED and now it's time for an OLED :)
We do live in amazing times. Who else remembers back in the day when all we had were CRT TVs that weighed literally 5x-10x as much as the heaviest TVs today. and we were thrilled with something above 30 inches in size, and then 40 inches. For HUNDREDS of pounds.
I just can't go back to LCD. Superior viewing angles, color depth and impact, uniformity, instant response and perfect blacks are just too much of a compromise to make. Not to mention that you need to spend the same (if not even more) on a flagship miniled which will again only in some instances resemble and be close to what OLED can do.
The problem is every rgb TV is almost different. None are true rgb, the algorithms change. Some brands do it only for test patterns then change the entire eay the tv displays the image and color as Vincent went over. Sony will be the first true rgb led when theirs come out which will be nice and unique to see.
How many of you are waiting for the review of TCL QM8L? 😂
I’m the kind of person that always has a video game UI on my screens all the time so I worry about OLED burn in which is why I’m excited about RGB.
I own a LG G3. Best purchases I’ve ever made. That picture quality is incredible. Paired with a great surround system. 👌🏼 I haven’t been to a movie theater in years. No need.
Congratulations on doing your own thing l have been watching your concert for years keep up the great work and thank you
Okay, so I was one of those guys you don't need OLED Mini LED are good enough I don't know about rbg but after owning my C5 for a few months now, it's not the blacks that everybody talks about being the defining factor but the motion it's crazy. And then when I look at it, it looks like I'm looking through a clear glass window if that makes sense with my mini LED TVs that I've owed it's like looking through a window with a screen on it. I can never go back after noticing this.
I just bought an open box Bravia 8 II 65" for $1,500 from Best Buy simply because it was so cheap. HUGE upgrade from our Sony A80J (WOLED). For the big home theater there's nothing as visually satisfying and comfortable as an RGB laser projector (which we're about to try the new XGIMI as a replacement to the JVC).
Great video Caleb! Im a long time oled evangelist but the new RGB tech seems alluring. Glad an oled seems to fit my use case perfectly still.
Thank for this really informative video 😊
I think instead of comparing RGB Micro LED vs OLED, we need to compare it vs TCL’s SQLED technology. The reason being the TCL X11 is very close in contrast and black level to OLED. So does SQLED color levels beat RGB Micro LED levels?
I love my OLED TVs but man, 77" was the hard limit due the absurd price jump past that 77" works for the space and distance, but if and when the TV needs to be replaced someday, I might be willing to trade off the extreme contrast to jump a size or two for the true theatre experience. Love seeing the new tech, whether I'm watching it on my OLED phone, OLED TV, or, uh, LCD iPad.
