Welcome, gardeners! Today started out as such a productive gardening day as I worked on getting the rest of the podocarpus planted along the front fence. I had a few leftover trees from the back garden project and thought this would be the perfect place to add some evergreen structure and privacy… but things quickly took a turn when the bees from the nearby hives started aggressively attacking me! What started as a simple planting day turned into a call to the beekeeper and a whole lot of confusion about what had the bees so upset. Gardening definitely doesn’t always go according to plan, and today was one of those days 😅 Enjoy! 💌 Looking for some monthly garden inspiration? Janey, As an ex beekeeper…The bees will sting Monty, put him in the house!!! Those bee suits WON’T keep you from getting stung. I had a very very aggressive hive and they stung me up and down both arms and shoulders. I immediately got ill and had to go to the house to take Benadryl. Get rid of them because you’re obviously terrified of them. Perhaps the queen has died and needs replaced or is on her way out. I’ve been through Oregon State University bee school and know this. Bees sound great to most people but when reality sets in it’s a different story. Have the beekeeper remove them.
Podocarpus Gracilior , Laurus nobilus ( Bay laurels ) and Pineapple Guavas along my side fences for privacy
Janey please be careful. I know of multiple dogs who have been attacked and died when bees have "swarmed".
Jim "Hortube"...on using shrubs for privacy...he recommends using different shrubs, but not lined up like soldiers..stagger in and out, or groups..the reason being if a disease strikes a certain plant, your privacy is not totally wiped out. I love varying greens and textures..maybe some zig zag planting etc..
I have bees and sometimes they get grumpy for a bunch of reasons but if they are grumpy and I need to work, i set up a sprinkler to gently rain on the hive and they let me alone! Hope this helps
Get rid of those bees!
Janie, don't move the trees that are thriving just replant where the others died.
When hives get aggressive it's no good. You should have the bees picked up. it will become a real hassle since you are a just a kind gardener not a bee keeper. Good luck!
Janey please let the trees that are thriving stay where they are and just plant the new ones in the “ holes”. The irregular backdrop will be much more natural than a pattern. You might even get a third type of tree to add in.
Bee’s could still bite Monty on the nose, lips, inside his mouth if he catches one!😮
You could also plant at dusk
Bees need to find a new home...you've done your due diligence. Very common for bees to sting a dog. Be careful! and Monty too!
Poor Monty! He can’t tell you if he was bitten! 🥲
Get one of those smookers it calms them down.
Bye-Bye-Bees !
Please keep Monty away from the bees! My dog was getting stung and he was fighting, snapping at them and one flew in his mouth, he was ok, but it was scary driving to the vet
I HOPE MONTY STAYS AWAY FROM THOSE BEES; YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL
I think I would maybe have her come back and get her bees. 🐝 I like the privacy screen! 😊
Planting when they're not active of course. You're in their area!
I’m thinking about your Yardline viburnums. I wonder if the ones that are thriving had a little help from neighboring plants shading their roots during that establishment window. Then once they settled in, they could handle more on their own. Jim Putnam talks a lot about mixed screen borders. What if you added 3 Podocarpus in the bare section to the right and maybe a focal plant with different foliage color or texture dotted here and there. No pattern required, just a natural, layered mix 😊
