Quite the angle to tell this story from, Cathy Ames' perspective! One of the vilest villains in literary history.
It's definitely a choice to focus on Cathy, I hope this doesn't mean the rest of the characters are minimised. When I think of East of Eden I always think of Samuel first, so I hope him and his family are a big part of this version.
My favorite book of all time, and I'll reserve my judgement until the show's out, that being said...in the book and according to Steinbeck, Cathy is a total representative of Satan and a force of pure evil, more akin to Hannibal Lecter than say Frankenstein's monster. Her inherent evilness is central to the biblical allegory in the story and other central themes like fate and free will. Making her more sympathetic and overexplaining her psychology could potentially do more harm than good. But again, I'll reserve my judgment until the show's out.
Idk how I feel about it. They’re going to make you empathize with a sociopath… I’m super excited for Lee tho. Praying to God they do his and Sam Hamilton’s character justice.

I actually liked the mini series from the 80s with JANE SEYMOUR.
Joseph Zada is playing Cal, the part made famous by James Dean. Good luck to him hope he knocks it out of the park. Seems like it's going to be focused on Cal's mom Cathy Ames played by Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbot playing Adam Trask, Cal's father going by the teaser. Kate Winselt/Sam Mendes son Joe Anders is playing Cal's twin brother. Also it's written by Zoe Kazan, who's grandfather Elia directed the Original adapation with James Dean.
