The Automotive world is littered with "Would've/Should've" models; some more deserving than others. I think the AMX concept ranks right up there with the Chrysler Atlantic (1995), the Ford Forty-Nine (2001) , and the Mercedes-Maybach 6 cabriolet (2017). The problems arrive when design, practicality, regulation and cost all collide. As a result, we are all denied the opportunity to experience some of the most unique automotive designs that these talented folks had to offer... Great vid, thanks for putting this together!

Gorgeous car. At first glance I mistook it for a Pantera.

This is the only American sports car design that rivaled Italian design at the time… very nice👍

Great looking, even today. I'd call it TIMELESS.

The Embargo and safety requirements would've killed the model.

I think the AMX 3 styling was not yet refined enough. I dislike the front end. Too wedgey and not convinced it won't lift at high speeds. It's just wrong to me too sophomoric.

Sure it could’ve worked. It was amazing. But Americans and possibly people in other countries have to deal with price points, gas prices, and insurance regulations which are cost prohibitive for most working class people. If it’s not a luxury car, wealthier people ignore it.

I find the AmX/2 gorgeous. The AMX/3 on the other hand appears amateurish in styling. The rear quarter swoop isn’t harmonious with the rest of the car. As if too much ambition encounters not enough style. The AMX/2 is just right, from front to back. Just right.

I've always loved the look of these cars, and like many enthusiasts, wondered what could have been. Unfortunately, the realties of a small car company with very limited funds and only a few visionaries with the ability to execute something so drastic, I expect if it had gone into production too many cost saving compromises would have been implemented, diluting the drama and performance. Maybe it's better to have a few prototypes in their truest forms than a couple hundred watered down production cars. And does anyone believe something like this would be produced very long by a company like AMC? Optomists might opine that this could have lead to successive high performance cars and allow AMC's reputation to evolve. That would have been great. If only.

It looks like the Holden Hurricane from Australia in the late 60’s.

The Pantera was just about $10K at release. AMC was projected to be about $12K. Neither were really sorted when the Pantera went to market - but 1st to market wins the debut publicity.

The car was shown in 1970, from that point to a full production model in 1972 or 1973. meaning that, if the car would only be sold in the USA it would have killed AMC quicker. If they would sell it worldwide it would have stood a chance. but the only real way for it to be a success and survive was to create a new brand for this vehicle (or take over an old brand name from the group) so they could differentiate it from their normal model line. Yes, it could have competed with all the other brands, but only if it was sold to people who cared little about fuel prices. If it was indeed that good in Monza, and had other great qualities, which with BMW on board would indeed have been the case, then yes. If a success BMW might even work on a joint chassis for their future models, and in that case AMC could have benefited from BMW quality instead of Renault. It would be a whole different car world.

I nerver heard about this concept car. And now that I saw it it feels like a pain in my heart that this was never built. But maybe someone picks the brand and the concept up. Because the AMX/2 deserves to be produced. Especially the combination of this design, an American V8 and BMW engineering to make it actual engineering. This could have been an amazing combination.

Front was an absolute styling blunder . Should have been patient with Giugaro .. very average to poor design
