I've never liked souls games. Dark souls never clicked for me, i bounced off it on the Xbox 360 and decided the genre wasn't for me... then Elden Ring came out in 2022. After years of hearing about how this game is a masterpiece, i thought i'd finally give it a proper shot and see if i could actually learn to like it. This is the start of a new series where i try to learn to like games i've previously bounced off. let me know in the comments: what souls game i should try to like next?. my patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/Sharpdressedgoblin

40hrs before godrick isn't crazy. Spending those 40hrs all in stormveil is crazy
Sounds like you might like Sekiro more.
Way back when i played DS1 at a friend, i immediately went "nope, im not good enough at this, the game is too confusing and open, not for me", and watching YouTube after, i enjoyed the main premise of the game, but got my initial thoughts cemented in my brain Then a few years ago i tried elden ring, and got hooked. 1200 hours, 800 hours on its spinoff nightreign, and ive since gone back and beat DS1 and almost all of DS2. Once you get the hang of how to souls it all opens up so much. So props on going back to souls despite having your initial thoughts. Incredible vid
That ER open world slander is pure madness and I won't hear otherwise. But I will reserve judgement since it's likely to change
I love gravity, it keeps me grounded. -John Elden Ring
There is a bunch of stuff to find in the open world, including opening multiple quest lines that open multiple endings. There are weapons, Armour, spells, summons, and other dungeons to find. Exploring the open world rewards that.
"I just Wanna go to the next legacy dungeon and not explore the boring, unrewarding and lazy open world" Yeah I mean the open world is there for people who struggle to get through the dungeons in the first place and wanna get stronger before continuing.. In this case the open world gives you options to go somewhere else for a little reset where in past souls games you could only keep trying without the option of a scenery change or finding ways to upgrade.. Also there's amazing things to find, amazing items, quests and locations but the way fromsoft delivers it's games is quite different to the mainstream which can lead to a feeling of "emptiness".. They don't throw stories and upgrades just in your face because they want you to feel that the world does not give a sh*t about you and that you are the one who has to seek those things with curiosity if you really want them just the way real life is.. But the way to approach it is definitely not "ticking boxes" and having to clear everything but rather just try to explore the things that actually look interesting to you and otherwise just try to get to your beloved legacy dungeonsy if you are strong enough ;) 😊
You were wrong and correct at the same time Mounted battles are best against giant enemies. Very counter intuitively, the mounted enemies are made fast and with wide attacks, to catch you riding with your higher speed. The best way to fight against them is dismounted, cause they are so fast they tend to miss or overshoot you.
lvl 40 for godrick is not crazy, grinding it all on that courtyard is crazy
Thing is there is so much to see, like legacy dongeons, hidden ones. All have their identity, and even the placement of crafting material, ennemies, the architecture, all is adding meaning to the story. You re almost meant to do multiple playthroughs, progressively upping the handicap for yourself, finding new routes, new builds, doing more lore oriented runs. And you truly can enjoy all those experiences for a very long time, if you add to it pvp. These games truly are something else. But not made for quick consumers, like random content creators.
I felt the same way about Souls games until a friend recommended Bloodborne. Instantly had me hooked. I didn’t vibe with Elden Ring at first but after playing for a little (10 hours) it really got me addicted. I went into Godrick at level 47(!) after spending literal hours roaming Limgrave and getting smoked in Caelid.
Honestly from watchin the video I think Dark Soul 3 might be the one for you. It is more modern, have very similar style of gameplay to ER and it is basically just legacy dungeoning that you liked. And yes, you can go on goblin grind as well.
there are hidden bosses and items on the open world map. and many parts are still crafted smartly with encounters like the dungeons. i have adhd too and every part of the map was dopamin to me. an addiction to see everything
26:14 this is what makes me call Elden Ring a “cozy game”. I’m on my second full play through (last one got halfway through NG+ including DLC) and sometimes I just like putting on chill music and rolling around the lands between, hacking at whatever I come across
The accidental dismount drives me crazy too. I tend to blame own low skill though. My brain fully understands that pressing L3 dismounts but when an enemy approaches, my stupid hand consistently tightens its grip (like he thinks we’re preparing for a real fight so he’s thinking FIST) which makes my stupid thumb press down at the worst moment.
The Shield is really powerful in Elden Ring. The whole dodge talk you heard probably spilled over from the other souls games where the Shield was genuinely pretty bad and not a viable option compared to dodging. People applied that logic to Elden Ring at the beginning too, until they realized that they made Shield viable for once.
Respect u didn't put this foolish ambitions to rest
Most OG souls fans totally agree the big dungeons are the best bit but by this point they had done that four time plus two similar spin offs (Bloodborne and Sekiro). So just doing it again for a fifth time wouldn't hit the same regardless of quality. Fromsoft knew they had to mix it up but still keep what people loved and I think that's also why we've had a mech game and a multiplayer focused game since as they want to let us get hungry again. Plus Miyazaki's gotta think up another universe worth of lore and that's probably really tricky to after so many similar games
2:53 that was uncalled for bruh. 💀 Edit: oh, it was London. 🗿
The souls community won't let that intro slide.
