The whole shared footpath/cycle path thing in the UK is such a cop out. It's blatantly been done to make the gov be able to claim we have loads of cyclepaths whilst in reality putting pedestrians at risk. Does my head in.
Given how much road noise there is in this video.. 10/10 on your micing/audio leveling skills, well done. This could have been atrocious, but I was able to understand every word!
Why did they build it like this? ... Savage
this is peak chris spargo, i would watch 100 videos about long forgotten infrastructure

"He's a cyclepath" My dad's favourite joke.
Fun fact: The original plan of HS2 included a post-construction phase where all the haul-roads used to create the railway would be converted into cycle paths / walking paths (aka active travel paths). Stupid morons in the Treasury (or the Department of Nope) demanded that this was "de-scoped to save public money". We are still building all the haul roads (as the railway can not be built without them). And after the construction ends, we are going to be paying for the haul roads to have grass replanted, instead of creating a bunch of absolutely amazing cycle paths that follow a large part of the route between Birmingham and London. Obviously there are no haul roads for all the tunnels, but just imagine how easy it would be - if we didn't throw away this opportunity to have cycle paths that are 90% financed by the need to have HS2 haul roads - and all we needed to do was to build a few link cycle paths to get around the tunnelled sections. The possibility of an increase in cycle tourism in that part of England would be off the scale.
The 12000 miles of cycle paths you listed is the NCN over half of which is on road routes, not necessarily cycle paths. 9:38
I wish all rural roads at least had pavements for pedestrians.
All the people commenting on 8:15, having not batted an eyelid at 7:07!
I'm glad to see more and more criticism of car infrastructure and how it takes away from cycling and walking. All we get with that is more stress, danger, noise, pollution and fatter butts.
When certain slices of society in Britain lament the past they don’t often talk about our affinity for cycling. Funny that.
Safe separated cycle paths in rural England would have been a godsend. The roads between villages are terrifying enough to drive on with their poor visibility and high speed limits. Imagine if you could go to the pub two villages over on a bike without ever having to interact with a car. The roads wouldn't be clogged up with parked cars, you could drink pretty much as much as you'd like without much risk of injuring anyone but yourself.
1:10 An actual cyclist comes into shot!
every Dutchman can tell you immediately what's wrong with the intersection at 8:53 (and it's not the colour btw) The Dutch solution leaves place for one car to either leave the main road or get ready to join it without blocking the cycle path, this doesn't. It's a typical case of so near, but still so far away
5:59 this is is a sentiment that needs to be explored more. We had high density but attractive townhouses, electric trams, and extensive train network. On most of these fronts we've gone backwards and at the cost of the environment and our health.

I wonder if Google maps would still take you down these unmaintained paths
Title (at time of commenting, "Britain had a chance to be the Netherlands. We chose cars.") reads like we used cars to fight off Dutch conquest somehow. Thank you Sid Meier
