The series has been a staple of mascot horror for years by this point. Markiplier was usually quite positive when he’d cover the previous chapters of this franchise, but something was very different this time. A question coming from everyone who saw this clip was… what the hell happened? To make sense of that, we need to go back to the very beginning… to Poppy Playtime Chapter on- FNAF. I swear this is important for the story- The reason the game ended up the way it did was because its creator, Scott Cawthon, received a lot of criticism on his previous game, Chipper and Son’s Lumber Company, for the character’s reaching the uncanny valley. A certain reviewer would say they resembled creepy animatronics or mascot suits you’d find at a place like Chucky Cheese or the UK equivalent… We don’t have one… It's no fun here- Scott turned the bug with Chipper and Son’s into a feature and accidentally made one of the most successful and famous video games ever! Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach! WIth the astronomical success of the FNAF franchise, it spawned its own *separate horror genre*. Media focused on scary, but marketable mascots would now all be placed under the title of Mascot Horror and oh my god was this thing a mixed bag! You’ve got FNAF which I consider the gold standard for mascot horror, but even those games started to get very messy with future releases. [chipper, keep tone] There’s Bendy- I haven’t played it sorry- BanBan and the rest! The most successful game in the genre post FNAF is a [sarcastic, keep tone] itty bitty little, tiny game that you probably haven’t even heard of called Poppy Playtime. It barely made a splash on the internet and almost immediately faded into obscurity. Joking aside, this game did really well! The demo was inescapable for the first year and a bit after it released. People were theorising where the game could go from that cliff-hanger ending, a bunch of youtubers were making videos on their play-throughs of the game, it was so popular that a bunch of content mill channels would put Huggy Wuggy on all their thumbnails! That’s a very big deal, only the most popular and current thing get put on those thumbnails! During those first few chapters, Poppy Playtime was the darling of the mascot horror franchise! But then Chapter 5 was released. 4 had been a bit divisive, sure, but 5 seemed to be the breaking point for a lot of people, and I wanted to figure out why. My name is Ty or Definitely Bored Oranges and in today's episode of torturing myself for the amusement of my fans”, I find out what went wrong with Poppy Playtime.

Off-topic, but I want Iron Lung to win an award so whenever anyone talks about Markiplier, he can be introduced as "award-winning director Markiplier"
Still don’t understand how Playtime had enough money to build an underground facility the size of fucking TEXAS
In Chapter 4, we can see entire mountains of bloody destroyed toys in no man’s land. If we assume that each toy used to host a child, which the games insist they do, that means Playtime co has killed at least hundreds of thousands of children... *AND WAS NEVER INVESTIGATED BY CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES* Incredible storytelling
Its better to piss in the sink... then to sink in the piss.
It's ironic how mascot horror games often have some sort of anti-corporate theme, yet the genre has produced some of the worst corporate slop in recent years.
new character = death
16:57 She is in fact NOT voiced by someone different in every chapter, it’s always Nola Klop. Her voice direction just massively changes each installment for some reason.
Chapter 5 was supposed to be the final Chapter, stated by the original creator/director, Isaac Christopherson, who left after chapter 3’s release. Nightmare critters, Outimals, Giblet and Chum are new characters that never existed in the original outline, with Lily being a scrapped concept. The chapter was going to be really story dense and contain heavy amounts of lore we still don’t know about, specifically about Elliot Ludwig. The doctor was not meant to come back as he would’ve been used differently in chapter 4. Where in the original outline when you meet him, he tells you his story, and how he crashed the train in chapter 2, where “in a trick” he sends you up to the factory floors, having to deal with Yarnaby. As Yarnaby dies being ripped apart by the factory’s machines, you claw your way back down and try to destroy a giant machine that powers the doctor, as he actively tries to kill you in his robotic form and begs for you to stop before meeting his end. The original Prototype looked a lot more like CatNap’s shrine, having a top heavy body and long neck, as he was made out of scraps, human parts, toy remains, while having visible organs. He would’ve had the heads of Mommy, CatNap, and Doey incorporated into him. He also had several Grabpacks on his back to pursue you. The original prototype spoke with little malice and focused more on observation, as he never saw himself as the villain. He just wanted to protect the toys, but did so in the worst way possible. Chapter 3’s Prototype VHS tape best shows his original characterization. Isaac and the main developers(ZAM) left due to creative differences and differing opinions on the studio’s management/direction.
You know we’re fucked when markiplier is the one shitting on the game
Literally everything you say is true and correct how do you DO that. but also important note: when you were talking about the rip-offs and lack of creativity, one thing you missed by not playing Bendy: the first Poppy chapter was literally the exact same thing as the first Bendy chapter. Ex-employee returns to their old workplace where some tragedy previously happened without really knowing what is going on, solves some puzzles, is suddenly attacked by a monster with a sideways crescent headshape and falls into a pit. End chapter. It's extremely blatant and the fact nobody noticed this drives me insane. - Connie
internet be like: if you like mascot horror games you should die if you hate mascot horror games you should die you really can't win huh
Markiplier was NOT always positive with Poppy Playtime, there's a good video i reccommend called "Mark progressively losing his patience with Poppy Playtime"
Poppy Playtime to me as an outside observer is like that one meme where there’s a drawing of a horse and it gets more poorly drawn over time
A lot of people gave Mark a ton of hate on his take of Chapter 5 without considering the fact that if Markiplier, the Garten of Banban apologist, is complaining about the ORIGINAL game that Banban ripped off, there might be a problem with the original.
"I know we didnt bother to introduce any of the critters in the story at all but please buy their ugly ass plushies for $30 each"
Ever since the NFT fiasco I’ve always had the vibe that Poppy’s Playtime only existed to cash in on how big mascot horror for kids was at the time. Literally made in a lab to sell merch to children
Oh finally someone is discussing how Mob started as a borderline elsagate channel. People used to shout me down when I pointed it out.
Another big disbelief break from this series is the just sheer amount of dead toys/kids, there is no way they got away with this many dead kids “Well actually you see, In chapter 5 they reveal that a lot of the smaller toys were actually from playtime co creating a MEMORY VIEWING MACHINE and made BRAIN CLONES with POPPY GEL, so they had infinite test subjects” DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF?!?!!
Mark is the one that had the best take when Chapter 5 released, it's so obvious that the quality is being lowered and that they delayed the finale out of greed.
The chapter 3 effect, on this franchise has to be studied. Cause it gave people so much hope, only for every other instalment to underdeliver so hardly. (That’s atleast how I see it.)
