This has a South African setting. Or maybe a Rhodesian one? The kid's accent is realistic: Southern Africa was settled by the Dutch and the English, so the Whites there really do have an accent that is a curious mix of European accents. And, yes, mamba snakes and tsetse flies are real too. The latter cause an illness that is popularly known as "sleeping sickness".

I think a lot will go over most Americans. Like the mamba and tsetse fly. The black / you get the green mamba too. Are mostly deathly, the fly gives you a sickness where you slip into a coma and eventually die.
