“That better not be long distance”…was a classic line I heard growing up.

We used to use this method to get our parents or older siblings to pick us up from wherever we were lol

When using the payphone to calling your parents to pick you up after hockey practise

No lie. I remember calling my mom and instead of saying the name of person calling I would say pick me up. Then hang up.

Just before the market opened up in Canada, it cost $3.15 a min long distance to call my cottage here in Ontario, which was a 90min drive away. Ma Bell (nickname for the phone company) was making bank.

I haven’t seen this in probably 25 years but as soon as Bob started talking I finished his line and the parents’ - it all came back to me instantly - this is a classic.

That was how I said I was OK on my weekly calls to my parents when I was in the Army in the 1970s. With free long-distance on cell phones now, you don't need collect calls unless it is from jail.

It was really like five dollars for long-distance phone call and then a dollar a minute. Truly high price!! 😂😂

I remember this commercial. People would actually do stuff like this to leave a message without getting charged. You could say where you were just by saying stuff like, "Collect call from Jennifer Zouse"
