The solution, for what it's worth, is to use "piquant" to describe chilis and "spicy" for actual spices.
hot sauce is not the only spice. we have a word for when spices are hot and it's hot. cinnamon buns are not hot but they are spiced. please. I don't want to live in a world where hot sauce is the only spice.

Cinnamon is a warm spice, but the term "spicy" is generally reserved for spices for more heat (unless you use waaaay too much cinnamon) You're a mason in all our hearts, Kathleen
