Ultra Processed: How Food Tech Consumed the American Diet | CBS Reports

Food

Americans are among the world's biggest consumers of ultra-processed foods, which comprise more than half of an average adult’s diet and two-thirds of a child’s. As technology continues to accelerate innovations in additives, chemicals and food products, U.S. regulators are struggling to keep up. CBS Reports examines why ultra-processed foods have become so pervasive in the American diet, and what filling the gaps in federal regulation can do to ensure Americans are fed and healthy. Can someone explain to me what the American dream means? They poison you with food, health insurance is expensive and barely available, they sell you houses made of wood, and they constantly bombard you with patriotism, to go to wars against the rest of the world, to defend your country. I have no desire to visit the USA as a tourist...

That ending broke my heart. I hope Tiara is doing well despite that great loss, her mom would have wanted her to keep living her very best life. As she said she was proud of her. <3

I have a very simple food and drink rule….if any product label has more than 3 ingredients or any ingredient I cannot pronounce, I do not buy it. Eat Whole Foods!!!!

Big tobacco has now become big food. All of those tobacco companies-RJ Reynolds and Philip Morris bought Kraft, Nabisco, Procter & Gamble. I’m sure there’s others??

As an European living in the US for 16 years: it is still shocking to me. We're outliers because we don't like or buy processed foods and most people are surprised to see that my kids don't bat an eye at kale salads and "adult food". It's a huge culture problem, because honestly it costs less to buy raw ingredients in bulk, even organic ones, than the processed stuff. People are just no aware of it or have no idea since they were never exposed to food outside the US. Even schools in France have homemade food cooked and prepared on site. Here I have to make my kid's lunches or they would eat fast food every day for lunch. Not only is it bad for them, but it costs more per student as well.

When I went Vegan a year ago everything changed for me both physically and mentally...I dropped 55lbs efforlessly for the first time in my life. Today my annual bloodwork came back, and my cholesterol, tryglycerides ans bloid sugar levels were all within the normal range for the first time in 25 years!!

What a great subject... CBS Reports was the gold standard in long form investigative reporting... This is an important story and could have been great! but its just not the same... It lacks the same quality the CBS was known for. Good story telling with intriguing content .

I was once in the USA on a business trip and I was just shocked that on every corner you see a different fast food chain and that there are so many people that are overweight. Not just a little bit heavier than others but really, really fat. And what shocked me the most: We were waiting at the airport to fly home and then a guy in his 30s with his wife and five kids came along. Both parents heavily obese, the guy could hardly walk. But he carried several bags from Bojangles. Then they sat down, he grabbed a big box with fries and pulled lots of them out with one hand to stuff them into his mouth. His kids started to take other boxes with chicken nuggets. It was disgusting and sad. First, this dude will most like die young from heart attack or something. Second, his kids - while not obese yet - will most likely eat that garbage, too, for the rest of their lives and also live an unhealthy life. It‘s just insane what the Americans eat, what junk you find in supermarkets and how fat and unhealthy this society has become. The sizes of packaging is just not normal. While you buy here in Europe 1-2 liter bottles of cola, the stuff you get there is bigger und sweeter. And then the variety. You walk through isles of chips, cereals and processed pasta (so many Mac&Cheese varieties). America doesn’t need a Third World War to be on the edge of extinction. The food they eat will do the job.

People think I’m nuts for consuming very little upf and sugar. I’m 62 and reversed type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure., chronic long term IBS, migraines and arthritis. I also lost 50lbs wirhout dieting. I take no medication at all.

My heart goes out to the daughter who lost her Mum. My family struggles with diabetes and it took me Grandmother from me. My Mums life were constantly hindered by diabetic complications. She passed at 58. I'm 40 now and I miss them so much. It's hard trying to change your lifestyle and getting those you love involved. Watching them pass away from something you're actively changing is devastating.

My 16year old son was diagnosed last year with ulcerative colitis. His GI Dr would not say diet contributed to it and they wanted to put him on biologicals, which I refused and asked if we could start off with the least aggressive medication (Mesalamine). After suffering from another flareup we changed his diet to VERY MINIMALLY processed foods and lots of organic fruits and veggies. No more flare ups. No biologics. Common sense over $$$
