Saw this movie today. I love horror movies and the scare from them, but I have never felt the fear that I did in this movie. For me, I would give it a 9.5/10!
If my daughter kept a bright ass fluorescent lamp next to my death bed… I’d toss her ass down the stairs too!!
This was on its way to being the best horror movie I've seen in years...until the ending. I'd hate to think there was an alternate ending that was even worse than they one used.
To me my interpretation its easy. Evie wants to be a good daughter, and she wants to take care of her mother yet she also resents having to and resents herself for not being fully present.. She is unsure as to whether or not she is going to actually keep her baby as is indicated in the conversation with her doctor.. is she up to be in a capable parent or should she run away. well she keep the baby or will she get an abortion. this wanting and conflict over wanting to destroy her child can even be represented by the demon. Finally the audio files takes her and us the viewers deeper and deeper into her world of guilt and self loathing and personal conflict.. it’s a psychic breakdown from the inside
The ending was just the production company running out of money
Reminded me a lot of the Babadook in the sense of sure there was this paranormal entity but it was symbolic or played hand in hand with the Female Lead (mothers) trauma.

I saw Undertone Thursday night. I was really looking forward to seeing it. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. The ending didn't stick the landing for me. Thanks for this breakdown.

This movie absolutely sucked ass.
You know, if Evie had mentioned to Justin before the last four audio recordings that she was pregnant, I feel like a lot of this could've been avoided. Generally I liked this character, but what I didn't like is that she was so much of a skeptic that even on audio 9 she was trying to disprove everything even though she had this weird stuff on, and it only took the 10th audio to realize, it was too late for her to turn back. Like listening to this possessed pregnant couple, if he had known that Evie was pregnant herself, he would've been "alright we're shutting this down, this is too much of a coincidence" being the guy who was believing in this demon. Although that tragedy of, not wanting to believe the truth of what was happening to her until the last second and all of her grief and doubt coming to a crashing halt in the last 10 minutes was really affective. While this isn't the scariest movie ever, it's genuinely creepy, and the ending isn't very strong but the implications are very thought provoking and I enjoy that about it
I wanted to love this movie but fell short when I compared it to AppleTV's "CALLS". While that show focused on mainly audio horror, it's the well done atmosphere, tone, unsettling eerieness of how the phone calls and great dialog paint pictures in your mind. From it's mysterious intro to the incredible ending conclusion, CALLS wrapped up so nice that the genre of this audio/analog horror is what I look forward to in other forms of media. I was really hoping Undertone would take that tone but sadly the conclusion felt rushed and open-ended. Overall great film but I know there's way more other sources of media that have done it better. Looking forward to the director making a Paranormal movie though
I love the genre and pretty much everything A24 and Neon. But in your review (and on reddit), there's simply too much heavy lifting. I'm all for breadcrumbs but this was dust. People in my theater laughed out of confusion and a sort of 'well that was weird', and for once I didn't blame them.
Take Hereditary, Paranormal Activity and The Ring and put them in a blender and pour it out and you get this movie...
I don't believe it was in her head the cyclical demon was real it was all literal.
The problem with the baby theory is that we see the lead taking a pill. I thought it was implied that that was an abortion pill and that she wasn't keeping the baby.
Get rid of all the tropes in act 3, give me just a teeny litttttle more clarity on the ending and trim some of the fat off the transitory scenes earlier on and we could have had a BANGER on our hands. I still had a great time with this movie but I was on the brink of breaking immersion multiple times throughout… and I’m a patient film watcher. People with less patience or attention span hating this movie isn’t surprising at all to me, but it is really unfortunate.
Just watched it and I loved it. It was amazing I loved how loud it was and every sound hits you different but tbh I feel like the ending should’ve been better but who knows maybe it was the best possible ending
