Aww, St. Rita was my confirmation saint. She's the patron saint of domestic violence victims, impossible causes (along with St. Jude), mothers (along with many others), difficult marriages, and is invoked against depression (my pick) and I think other mental illness... I'm out of practice so I can't fully recall. Her life story, with her family, is kinda wild. Not same patronage as what the movie says but I could see why she'd be a pick, given her ties to family traumas.

The thing about horror movies is that it makes me realize that I am definitely not white enough to experience all these things and go, “Huh…I think I better read these backwards words out loud to sound them out. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃” 😭

I went into this movie completely blind. I didn’t watch or read a single thing about it. As someone who lived with and helped take care of my dementia ridden grandma until her passing a ~year ago, I cried SO MANY TIMES. One of the friends I went to see it with also just had his grandma pass around the same time as mine. Usually he’s the one that watches the trailers and knows everything about the movie going into it but this was the first time he didn’t and he apologized to me afterwards. He said “if I knew it would be like that, I at least could’ve warned you and been prepared myself.” Lol and we hugged and cried when it was done. Easily one of the most impressive horror movies I’ve seen in a looonnggg time

I interpreted the ending as eve’s mother killing her like the other mothers killing the children, playing into the themes of parental trauma. Tho the ending with eve going through the same thing as other mothers makes sense, I kinda vibe with the mom killing her more

I love that people are dissecting this movie because it's one of my favourites of the year. I also got to meet and hang out with the director at a Canadian film festival screening! I want to add my own thoughts to this movie since the director and writer is Filipino and I see a lot of Filipino Catholic influence in the story despite the main characters not being Filipino. More so because this was shot in the director's own home, so the Filipino influence was literally all over the house, in the storytelling, and some of the background details. The statue of Sta. Rita de Cascia, for example, is infamous in the Philippines, and she's in Siquijor, which is famously the most haunted, witchy spot in the country known for having a lot of dark magic. There's also a lot of Filipino horror that centres specifically on childbirth, miscarriage, abortion, and feminine monsters that target children and pregnant women. The demon in this story is basically a fictionalized manananggal or tiktik, a mythological creature that likes to eat unborn babies, children, and small animals. They're unique for having long thin proboscis tongues, which might be connected to "lick the blood off". Despite having the serial numbers shaved off, as it were, there's a deep and undeniable Filipinoness to the horror that I connected with immediately as a Filipino horror audio creator.
