Secure your business with ThreatLocker today using our link: https://www.threatlocker.com/ltt I know we are WAY late on uploading Linux Challenge PT. 2.... Sorry about that. But in this video Linus, Luke and Elijah all break down the issues and the positive that happened within the first week of swapping over to Linux. Whether that was Linus picking PopOS, Luke swapping desktop environment, or Elijah trying to play some games. Each had highs and lows, also so people dont keep asking me, PT 3 was filmed the SAME DAY as this one so ideally you will see it soon! The best part about using Linux is the community. The worst part about using Linux is the community.
I like how when I say that you have to study Linux in order to use it - peoples get mad and try to tell me that it's not the case, but then they also get mad when someone has a hard time using it
Reddit is going to be so cool about this stuff!
Im 15 years in to my 30 day Linux challenge and im still learning. Keep going guys! Edit: Lots of replies here. It’s my job to administer Linux systems. I’m not just using it on my gaming machine. So yeah, I learn new stuff all the time. I’m responsible for 1700 Linux servers, workstations and endless containers.
12:12 I love how linus’ display keeps glitching on the login screen
File System Table: 😇 FSTAB: 😈🔪
Linux pros : you "control everything". Linux cons : "you" control everything. Edit: this isn't true for most cases, It's only about some specific and more advanced distributions out there (Without naming) And not for the daily usage distros Like mint, Ubuntu, fedora..... Theses are totally ok, And you're not left under that situation of fixing everything yourself Didn't believe? Go and try it yourself 😊 Just pick the "right one" for "your needs"
Props to the LTT Team for taking the *sometimes not always constructive* feedback of the community into consideration for the video, and responding to the critiques of the first. Very much enjoy the attitude and style of this video even though it's on a "hot" topic.
The biggest question is for system76 to respond: why the F is a beta DE the default on an LTS ?
The real culprit of the video codec thing is actually neither the game dev nor Valve - it's the US government I'm not even kidding: the codecs are not really "proprietary" (as in the company keeps the specs private and requires you to buy their own software to decode it), they are PATENTED - which means that while there's an open source library able to decode H.264 just fine you're not legally allowed to distribute it *IN THE US* without acquiring a license. In other countries software patents are not legally recognized, so an open source implementation of H.264 and H.265 is perfectly legal to ship with your software Also as somebody else pointed out in the comments Valve has provided a workaround for the official proton in the form of transcoding videos and inserting them in the shader cache, thus allowing proton to transparently replace them with versions encoded with free and open source codecs
love how luke figured out fundemental of linux, and want to dig deeper, sometime its good and dissapointment of hard difficultness.
As a deeply "Linux-pilled" person, I appreciate LTT doing this challenge. It's a good reality check/diagnostic and another resource for newbies to use. I think it's important for newbies to go in with eyes open, and for developers to get some high-profile coverage on issues they should be addressing.
A solution from VALVe for missing Video Codecs is the "Shade Pre-Chaching" Feature for Steam. It can also include re-encoded Videos in a more compatible Codec
Finally, Linux Tech tips.
Nice to see the disclaimer about the open source software developers and the effort to make clear that the complaints are not hate. Good. As a linux user I hope this experiment end up bringing a lot of nice people to linux!
For the Davinci Resolve issue you need the Studio version because the codecs are included there. Licensing issues are a huge pain.
Luke The Linux Chad
I don't blame Linus for choosing PopOS, I blame System76 for putting out pretty much an alpha as an "LTS" and listicles/AI for sucking and putting decade old information about it being """better for nvidia""" as a reason to still use it (every distro is about the same for nvidia now)
I feel like the linux’s communities hostile behavior is what will truly keep the “year of the linux desktop” a pipe dream for most people
17:59 The biggest threat to personal security here is those "smart" glasses.
