8 of the 16 host stadiums currently use synthetic turf — a surface that causes more injuries, changes how the game is played, and can hit over 140°F on an 86°F day. FIFA only allows natural pitches, but NFL stadiums were never built to hold real grass. That's why FIFA invested $5M just to research a solution. And while most venues cost $1–4M to convert, Toronto and Dallas had to spend $158M and $295M revamping their fields to also fix sizing issues. FIFA is also partnering with local farms to grow sod pitches that get stitched together with a small percentage of synthetic grass using a special machine. At Lumen Field in Seattle. They are indeed putting the real grass over turf. Also they used 19 million in state funds to add the grass for 6 world cup matches. That's ridiculous
