LIVING THE CAMBODIAN NIGHTMARE

Ed Bradley reporting on the refugee crisis from the Cambodia -Thailand border in October 1979 for CBS News Sunday Morning showed a short interview with Dr. Kenneth Rasmussen, a former emergency room physician ion Louisville, KY. I had done story on him for the Louisville Courier-Journal and immediately recognized the opportunity to go to Thailand for a story about his work with the Cambodian refugees. The newspaper sent me and writer Joel Brinkley to document the refugees, international aid workers, and Dr. Rasmussen in his clinic in Aranyaprathet, Thailand. Our reporting was published as a five-day series by the Courier-Journal in December, 1979. In April 1980 Joel and and I were awarded the Pulitzer Prize For International Reporting.
