Get to Know the Movement: History of WSCF and SCMs in the US (Part 1)
In the United States, for well over 100 years, student Christian movements have been engaged in advocacy for civil rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQI justice. We are connected to a legacy of anti-war, anti-imperial, and anti-racist theologians and activists, church and ecumenical leaders committed to global justice and global engagement. The height of the student Christian movement in the US happened alongside the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s-60s, when students lent crucial leadership, people power, and organizing skills to historical moments such as the Freedom Summer marches. In Part 1 of this discussion, current Yale undergraduate student Owen Hannon gives a presentation on the student Christian movement's engagement with anti-war activism throughout its existence, drawing on the WSCF archives to discover the grounding identity of the movement which carries through to today. Watch Part 2 to hear from past movement leaders about their experiences in the US movement and the global Federation.
