Youth on The Frontlines of The Middle East: Hanaa El Tigani

Sudan’s 2018 revolution marked a turning point, as youth across the country took to the streets demanding freedom, peace, and justice after decades of authoritarian rule. What began as mass protest evolved into organized movements led by resistance committees, placing young people at the center of political change. But as the transition faltered and conflict escalated into war, these same youth were forced to adapt, continuing their work under conditions of violence, displacement, and uncertainty. How does activism endure in the face of ongoing crisis? In this episode of Youth on the Frontlines of the Middle East, Hanaa El-Tigani, a Sudanese activist and researcher and Assistant Secretary General and Head of Programs at the Youth Citizens Observers Network (YCON), reflects on her journey from student to organizer, and on the evolving role of youth documenting and navigating Sudan’s reality today. Youth on the Frontlines of the Middle East is produced by the Middle East Studies Program at the American University in Cairo, highlighting youth voices shaping the region’s present and future.
