Israel Is Being Accused of Poisoning Lebanon's Soil. The Evidence Is Hard to Ignore | Maraz TV News
The municipality of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon has formally accused Israel of committing ecocide, urbicide, and domicide — the systematic destruction of ecosystems, cities, and homes. Lebanon's Environment Ministry is documenting the damage, and the government has announced plans to file a formal complaint at the UN Security Council. The evidence on the ground is extensive. Israel's 2026 bombing campaign has rendered at least 540 hectares of Lebanese farmland unusable since March. Soil samples from southern Lebanon show glyphosate — a herbicide linked by the WHO to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma — at 20 to 30 times normal concentrations, applied by Israeli military aircraft flying at low altitude over border villages. Heavy metals and phosphorus have been recorded at 900 times the normal level. Israel has also used white phosphorus, which while not outright banned under international humanitarian law, is clearly prohibited for use against civilians. This follows documented destruction from Israel's 2023–2024 war with Hezbollah — in which Lebanon lost 1,879 hectares of prime farmland, more than 47,000 olive trees, and around 1,200 hectares of oak forests. The 2026 campaign is continuing and expanding that pattern. Researchers at the Public Works Studio in Beirut say the evidence meets the legal threshold of ecocide. UN experts have condemned the strikes as releasing toxic air pollutants, contaminating water systems, and destroying ecosystems through fires, debris, and chemical residues. A growing international movement is pushing to recognise ecocide as a fifth international crime alongside genocide and crimes against humanity. As one researcher put it, the land is being made uninhabitable. That may be the point. 🎧 Listen Live: 4 Million tuning in now on tamilaifm.com — 24/7 Non-Stop Tamil AI Digital Radio 📺 More Coverage: www.maraztv.com — Maraz TV Sdn Bhd #maraztv #ecocide #lebanon #israel #bintjbeil #warcrimes #environment #middleeast #worldnews #iranwar2026 #humanitariancrisis
