Aluminum was the original name that was used for close to a century before the change. The ium suffix was added later as an attempt to standardize element names. This is a situations where both words are objectively correct and just depends on what your goals are.

I work for an aluminum extrusion company in the U.S. Aluminium is used globally but internally we still refer to it as “aluminum” even when speaking to clients, vendors, and colleagues overseas.
It was aluminum but it got changed to aluminium everywhere other than America to match the other "ium"s

The name aluminum is actually older than the British aluminium, which was changed for a final time to be in line with all of the other “ium” elements. Americans couldn’t be bothered to change it yet again once they had settled on aluminum.
