It's a really good idea and everyone hating on it probably doesn't understand it. Links 'n' stuff: Here's Prof. John Kelly's excellent demo of the eCVT (the mentioned Weber Auto YouTube Channel) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppyK3ZlUbtM And I linked in a card to Engineering Explained's demo, too, which may help those having a hard time wrapping their head around this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxmxIsoV_Xo Here's the Sights and Sounds video I mentioned: https://youtu.be/AtaG0PQYeVQ And here's a silly one telling anyone who will listen why they need to get over themselves and embrace the minivan: https://youtu.be/oEruzTKteRE Technology Connections on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/techconnectify.bsky.social Technology Connections on Mastodon: https://mas.to/@TechConnectify Have you ever noticed that I've never done that whole influencer thing? That was a pretty good "Thiiiiiiss" because for a split second I forgot I clicked on your video and not one of Doug's
The magic of buying two is getting a bit expensive, isn't it.
I was a Master Technician at Toyota for 16+ years and he just explained how and why the system works the way it does better than I ever could. Hats off to you. ❤
“Now that suddenly people care about fuel economy again…” Oh, it was a big suddenly alright.
If i knew the refrigeration cycle i may begin to understand hybrids
Weirdest Dishwasher yet.
One of the biggest flexes ever might be becoming a car youtuber without a single sponsor. What's next to come? "This little bolt keeps the whole helicopter flying" "What people get wrong about superyachts" "The hidden ingenuity in your skyscraper"
In revising the MG1/MG2 explanation, I deleted a demo and fact which I felt was probably just adding to confusion, but I'll explain it here for those who might be wondering what happens when the car moves while the engine is shut off: So, if you take the Cube off the ground and leave it in gear with the engine shut off, you'll find that rotating one of its front wheels will cause the opposite wheel to rotate backwards. At least two things will always be moving together, and without the engine putting a positive input into the differential, the tires turn in opposite directions. And _the same thing happens_ with MG1 when the car is using MG2 to move itself. MG1 will free-spin in the opposite direction! When the car wants to actually start the engine, it takes control of MG1 and forces it to spin forwards. When MG1 and MG2 are rotating in the same direction, their combined output rotation becomes split between the wheels of the car and the engine crankshaft, so forcing them to spin together (or, if MG2 is stopped, just forcing it to move at all) will engage MG1 with the engine crankshaft and that's why this car (and most hybrids) don't have a traditional starter motor. Pretty neat!
when he said it got 34 mpg i literally thought "wow that's better then my 2 door civic" just for him to then say that exact same thing
I appreciate the commitment to wearing various public transit related merch while talking about cars 😂
I thought I knew how hybrids worked. Turns out I only had half the story… this channel is sooo good!
I’m a 22-year Master Certified Sales Manager for Lexus, and I’ve never heard anyone explain hybrids this well — not in training, and not even during the handful of times I’ve met with engineers. Thank you!
22:12 You can even hear Alec saying "sorry" in the recording as he zooms around that truck.
Still can’t believe this channel’s content is free to watch. Unparalleled quality content.
Alec this is basically a feature length educational documentary at this point, and I for one am so appreciative of all the effort and dedication you put into these videos. Making America Smart Again
0:09 I’ve rented minivans, folded down all the seats and hauled an ungodly amount of stuff in what was essentially a giant pickup truck that was completely enclosed, had tons of headspace, and didn’t require air stairs to get into. Yes it’s the aesthetic equivalent to buying your clothes at Costco, but it’s also the functional and economical equivalent of… well buying your clothes at Costco.
This is one of your best explanations yet with one of the most mind-blowing conclusions. The realization that the ENGINE is the efficient part, and the motor is just there to supplement the power output is so cool and completely opposite of my original impression
The faint "Sorry" as he cut off that guy was way funnier than it had any right to be.
This guy made me go from "won't ever get a hybrid" to "will get a toyota hybrid for my next car". Congrats, amazing video as always.
