It's just pure bs no matter how you look at it. Firstly, it's not like she was ever gonna inherit the throne. She's the emperor's niece. And even then, women can't inherit, so the next in line isn't the emperor's daughters, but Mako's father. And the one after him is Mako's younger brother. So there's literally no reason why she can't choose her husband.
