The shoes usually have a ratchet adjuster on them, you want to have them pushed out a few clicks, to the point where the drum still goes on smoothly but is just touching the shoes, which you can hear when you turn the drum by hand. Bit of trial and error, then you adjust the cables on the handbrake lever. All that adjustment is doing is taking up slack in the cable, if you dont adjust the shoes before doing that then the handbrake will still be rubbish as the shoes have to "travel" first before they contact the drum 👍
Without the barrel installed you can on some cars risk the steering wheel lock engaging while driving. So I would not recommend driving it around like that.

Magnesium alloys which are used in the wheels are relatively fine. Pure metallic magnesium is the one that is highly flammable and burns pretty violently.

as a mechanic i need to correct a thing or two. The fishshaped adjustment thingy doesnt need fiddling with. Just push it up with a flathead. Then, when everything is back together you just press the brakePEDAL. the handbrake linkage will be pressed apart and the fish thingy will be pulled between to the right setting. AND ONLY THEN you adjust the handbrake cables. and there is no need to adjust it side by side. you want it to be kinda straight, but the plate on top is to balance the two cables anyways. If one is longer, the balancer wont be straight, but the leverage of both cables is still the same.
