In this episode of Hidden True Crime, Dr. John breaks down the Duggar family dynamics through a psychological lens, looking beyond the headlines to examine what may be driving these repeated and deeply troubling situations. Because at some point, we have to ask… is this random—or is there something more going on beneath the surface? We walk through the latest developments, what’s being reported, and why this case is raising familiar concerns for so many. Then Dr. John dives into the concept of family systems, patterns of behavior, and how environments can shape decisions in ways that aren’t always obvious from the outside. I really appreciate this break down. It helped me gain understand and self compassion on my journey of growth and healing.
The idea of hitting a BABY with a wooden spoon incites rage in me. The kind of rage that hits my core. 🤬
I recall watching a video of Michelle “ blanketing train” a 5/6 month baby. She placed the infant on the blanket and placed a rattle just out of reach and when the baby reached for the toy, Michelle pounced on the baby with negative action from scolding the baby, hand slapping and would do this over and over until the baby ignored the toy MENTAL & EMOTIONAL ABUSE
The absolute gall this family has to shout shame upon ANYONE else for the rest of time.
Holy crap! You just described my entire family history and the problems I still suffer today, at 57. I have such a chip in my shoulder regarding faith that even though I crave it, I can’t engage. My goodness, I will be replaying this over and over until I can process all of this. On a side note, I haven’t heard the name B.F. Skinner since college. Thank you so much guys! This is possibly life-changing for me. Just😮
This reminds of a time my sister was visiting (thank goodness, she had no children) and when I got out of the shower she came to tattle on my daughter (she was probably 4) getting up on the kitchen counter and looking in the cupboards. I just laughed. The conversation then turned to my sister getting angry and saying, “If you tell your child NO, and you mean it, the child won’t do it”, and I just laughed again. My sister was so mad she then left my home a few hours later cutting our planned visit short of several days.
For blanket training I’m pretty sure they even put a favourite toy off the blanket to tempt the baby and then hit them with a “switch” when they try to go get the toy.
Unrelated to the episode, but it's beautiful how much Lauren brightens up when she has a show with her husband. Love it!
Bill Gothard was Accused of sexual Misconduct 34 times. He is who the Duggers follow.
This really hit home for me after being S. abused by both my brothers. Why? Why did they do it? Mother was very controlling, and didnt show warmth. One brother disabled from birth was the "golden child" other brother was the middle child, bullied at school quite badly. I was told by my mother that the only reason they had me was because eldest brother might die and they didn't want the other brother to be an only child if that happened.
I find it rich that Michell says, there are children here, like she’s protecting children. Especially looking at the charges of two of her sons.
Never heard of “blanket training” till now. Starts as young as 6 months? WTAF?!! Sounds so cruel😢
I really hope the Duggar siblings watch/listen to this episode.
The philosophy at the end was really beautiful. I like when Dr. John connects the topic to the greater human experience
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The Duggar family have always given me the “ick” feeling. Never seemed healthy,
Why did TLC not report them to child services? TLC should be held responsible also..It is abuse!
Thank you so much for this!!! I have been watching the Dugger downfall since it started and Dr. John’s explanation of why this might be occurring two times in this family was super helpful! I’ve had my own opinions, but he really hit the nail on the head… I love how you look so adoringly at your husband Lauren congratulations on 10 years together and to many more ❤❤
I can’t imagine punishing a child so young they are crawling off a blanket and then hitting them!. Everything is wrong about that..
Love me some Dr. John analysis and all of the backstory Lauren gives us throughout the week.
You two are the dynamic duo… journalism coupled with psychology, which really adds such insight to why people do the things they do. Thank you❤
