Sean good, Jimmy bad, Dave always got the raw end of the deal.
You missed the beginning, the movie begins with a shot looking down from the heavens as 2 fathers sit on a 2nd floor balcony, there they can see their 2 sons Jimmy & Sean play with David in the street. Soon Jimmy wants to steal a car & Sean says his dad would kill him. One son obeys his Father looking down from above, the other chooses a different way. This is what the movie is about. The 2 sons, one chose to follow the law & one a life of choosing who lives & who dies, acting as God. The life Jimmy chose has markers that God will call in, as Sean said over Jimmy's lifeless child, & Jimmy admitted when he told his wife he knows he is somehow responsible for his daughters death. The final parade scene shows Jimmy's future, Sean will pursue justice for David, but look at David's son as he rides in the parade, more retribution & justice is coming.
I've always been impressed with all these actors but most specifically Marcia Gay Harden. She's amazing. So convincing in EVERY role she's ever played. This was a stellar performance by everyone. Clint Eastwood sure knows how to make movies I've gotta say. Great story and gut wrenching.

This movie deals is some of the most intense Kabbalstic imagery ive ever seen in a Hollywood film. Its all about the transmutation of white and black, life and death, black holes and white. Gravity’s Rainbow level stuff. Deeply disturbing
