Depending on what day it is the top spot for me switches between this, the thing and the godfather. It's one of those movies that has stuck with me since the first time I watched it and I remember being about 8 years old scared out of my mind after my first visit to the overlook hotel. But why does it have this long lasting power and influence. I mean on the surface you could be forgiven for thinking that the movie is extremely simple. As a kid I thought it was pretty much just about a family who were given the job of looking after a hotel and the dad went crazy and tried to kill them. However there's so many hidden layers to the film and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down all the subliminal ways that the movie messes with you along with it's hidden meanings. Now the biggest head f**k is the hotel itself. King came up with the idea for The Shining when visiting The Stanley Hotel out in Boulder Colorado. He and his wife booked it October 30th which was the night before it was just about to close for the season. They were the only two guests there and King spent the night wandering the long hallways of the hotel swept up in just how creepy a place like this could be if it wasn't teaming with guests. Now the idea of Shining comes from the John Lennon song Instant Karma. - This idea that people imprinted into something long after they're gone is what the Overlook embodies and it's seemingly filled with the souls of those that it's trapped along the way. Traumatic events leave longer lasting impressions and this is why it's teaming with all sorts of evil spirits. 4:55 wouldn’t the line “You have always been the caretaker” combined with the photo imply, that Jack has been reincarnating for some time and maybe it’s a family thing since Delbert tells him that he has been there….always.

I loe how the hedge maze is completely invisible at 0:36, almost as if it doesn't exist. I like to think that this was one of Stanley Kubrick's "tricks", as a subtle way to make the hedge maze feel like a supernatural place.

20:09 in a Kubrick class I took, we talked about the absolute importance that doubles and triples play within Kubricks filmography. He loves to play with the idea of doubling and mirroring and even splitting things, narratively or visually, into threes

36:16 makes me wonder now we know that Pennywise exists outside of time, maybe once consumed by the hotel “you’ve always been the caretaker”

I always liked the detail of very subtly pointing out that Danny and Wendy went out of their way to familiarise themselves with the hedge maze during their stay which allowed Danny to escape his father at the end of the film. He knew exactly how to lead his father into the center of the maze, and exactly how to get out.

Just saw The Shining in IMAX. WOW. Unbelievable experience that felt like I went back in time. The film grain, acting, and most importantly SOUND was breathtaking. So grateful for them showing it in theaters and now I’m back watching every breakdown video.. Again :)

I watched it in the cinema tonight because it was the 45th anniversar. I’ve seen the twin girls before and I’ve seen a clip of the “here’s Johnny” but I’ve never watched her the movie until today and it’s already one of my favourites

11:53 the music at the beginning is not Native American chants. It’s a Gregorian chant from the medieval times. It comes from the biblical “Judgement Day” which clearly depicts what the movie is actually about.

Probably still my favorite HS video ever! A couple notes and thoughts upon rewatch... 13:33 Dies Irae (Day of Judgment) is the Shining opening, yes; technically Clockwork Orange opening is "The Death of Queen Mary" which is influenced by Dies Irae (I only know cuz I play it on piano). Never noticed What's Up Doc being a reference to Doc the dwarf, not Bugs Bunny! Lends a lot of credibility to the intentionality of the disappearing Dopey sticker. Also notice how Wendy's dress is uncannily similar to the Goofy doll in his room, which also matches in shape and color to Danny on the trike. Re: native genocide, this is the main horror of the film IMO (and all genocide, especially by white men). I love the teepee/ladder transitions, I wonder if it suggests teepees were replaced by white men's constructions. There is a second 'ladder teepee' in the Gold Room and Wendy dances in front of it, in contrast to Jack dancing in the past sans ladder.

All I got to say is as far as the movie is concerned is that Dick Holleran deserved better.

7:00 I like to think that right behind that wall is the elevators,it doesn’t explain the other impossible layouts, but it’s plausible.

One thing ppl miss that I appreciate you mentioned is that Wendy in her first scene is reading “Catcher in the Rye”. If you know the summary and moral of said book too, it fits perfectly and is such a foreboding message.

i like how the film doesn't just hand you the details - you have to be engaged with the film to catch everything. true art and entertainment has been lost on hollywood and the masses. even as a young kid i knew this film was remarkable - just in the storytelling alone. the way the words and images come together to tell a story is just fkn magical.
