3DV (DynaDigiDataVac) is a 3D animated short film directed by Bil Maher and Chris St. Lawrence that was produced roughly between 1981-1983 at the NYIT Computer Graphics Lab. The short was originally intended as a pilot for 3D animated hosts, being shown to a variety of people in the industry including George Lucas and Jim Henson. Allegedly, User Friendly would serve as the inspiration for Max Headroom after Annabel Jankel watched the film at one of the lab's tours. With the demise of the lab's feature project titled The Works, 3DV was also used as a framing device to showcase the lab's best work for the feature. Courtesy of Richard Carter.

It feels amazing to finally have a high quality version of 3DV. Literally every other version of this was like 360p lol.
Somehow older CGI productions like this tend to leave me far more amazed than newer films. I just love the perspective that its a technological marvel that should be completely stylized and used to break boundaries, as opposed to the current corporate view on it that every film needs to use CGI to just replicate reality. Thats not to say there isnt modern content that doesn't use CGI to its greatest artistic extent though, just like this! I really think we need to see even more of that in the animation industry :D
Nothing will ever match the surreal tone of early CGI.

i miss the creativity of early cgi, it feels like a bunch of crazed lunatics made a lot of the early cgi and its great.
Back then it seemed futuristic, but today it's nostalgia

I went to NYIT during that time. Not a Computer major, but I was aware that they did the opening credits for the PBS series NOVA. The computer graphics lab was its own little highly-protected world. If you weren't part of it, you weren't allowed anywhere NEAR the place...even if you were a CompSci major.
