Gerrard was the complete midfielder If Scholes cud tackle then id have said Scholes. But Gerrard was box to box n he cud tackle without getting himself booked He cud win the ball on the edge of his own area and run with the ball and his team mates wud have to match that drive. I remember Gerrard scoring an equaliser against Croatia wen he drove forward with the ball made a pass carried on the run and got on the end of a cross and drilled in the equaliser that shud have taken us into the Euros in 08 The fact that we could not hold onto that result still annoys me 💙KRO 💙 FEA 💙💩 SOTV 💩💙

Gerrard isn't a complete midfielder for me. He could not run a midfield because he didn't rely on his intelligence as a player. He relied on physicality, stamina, and ability to roam. He had a good long range passing game and was a good at crossing, delivering in the final 3rd and shooting from range. You take away his ability to roam and give him some tactical information to maintain his position he's half the player imo. Remember against France when they played him as a DM and he gave the ball away for a penalty with that back pass? That's why Rafa Benitez used to criticise him early in his career for vacating his position. Xabi Alonso allowed Gerrard that freedom to roam. Because Alonso could dictate a game with his passing and intelligence. Gerrard was often at his best as an attacking 8 or as a hybrid 10 supporting the striker. However in a flat 2 man midfield he wasn't as effective. He was elite at what hes good, but like a lot of English players they cannot adapt if they can't do what they're good at. Which is why England struggle as a team imo. Some of our players are predictable in that sense. Bellingham is similar. Doesn't run games but can dominate with his strength, driving runs, box crashing. England love players like that. Lung busting, chest beating runners like Bryan Robson, Gerrard. It's engrained in the British psyche to be a try hard, heart on the sleeve. Gerard was an elite level player but not complete for me. Notice that the most reveared Premiership players are English or Irish( because of cultural overlaps)?

Another thing about Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes, they never really gave their clubs any problems. Compared to some of the modern day " superstars " they must have been a joy to work with for their fellow players and managers.
